hard not to despair at the state of the world!!! if I had to pick between nice-but-flawed Lula and The Failson Of The Worst Man Bolsonaro I would find it easy! how do these decisions keep being a toss-up! they should not be a toss-up! ahhhh!

#OnThisDay 4 October 1997 The BBC1 globe takes the form of a hot air balloon for the first time as the latest branding is unveiled to viewers. This clip compares continuity from the 3rd and 4th October, with the old and the new styles.

The replies to this are sociopathic. A young woman was stabbed to death in public! So many people on the internet have paper-thin politics that are just an excuse to create an out-group against whom violence is permitted; it’s a coin-flip whether the group is “professionals” or “immigrants”.

More, both sides need to understand a civil war isn't you gloriously defeating your Ideological enemies. It's your local criminal gang shooting you in the head for your car.

Saw a woman in Walmart today wearing a t-shirt that read: "I like eating Pizza & Asshole" Which is just *so* Walmart. It's much more explicit than just saying "ass" too. Good for her, I suppose!

It is genuinely bizarre that we’ve become acclimatized to right wingers throwing a tantrum every time a black person (particularly a black woman) is cast in something, but are also supposed to pretend that this is not racism but related to some other substantive concern.

I can't work out if this is intended as a punishment to Lisa Nandy, who clearly hates the job; or a punishment to the entire UK culture sector, which is suffering as a result of that. Maybe both?

I really hope Burnham succeeds but this guy was pretty irritating on The News Agents. Comes across as a total gobshite. The self-aggrandisement is really setting yourself up for an almighty fall if it all goes wrong.

Davies' second crack at Doctor Who was not wholly successful to say the least, but he managed to get it live a few more years after it would have otherwise ended up here in 2022, and we got a fair few great episodes along the way. Not good enough to have me mourning, but grateful it happened.

it feels quite bad that it's basically impossible to argue that much of the modern right in the west has become both entirely intellectually shallow and deeply, fundamentally morally corrupt without sounding like a tedious teenage tankie, because it is.....the factual truth

Anyway, my opinion about Star Trek, which is Good and Correct, is that two things have gone wrong: it is best served by 22 episode seasons, which streaming has killed, and also it is a franchise that needs you to inhabit the worldview of a Centre-Left Army Guy that few in modern US TV do.

Hmmmm. I think that implies that there was a prelapsarian time when Art as a pursuit existed outside of financial concerns and that was ruined by capitalism, but the idea of "art for art's sake"/the artist having free rein over their art without concern for consumers *or patron* is a fairly new idea

One of my favorite jokes of all time is "Adolph Hitler Commits Suicide" being a tiny headline under the banner story about a hare-vs-tortoise race ... in 1943, two years before Hitler committed suicide. He was alive and well when the Warner Bros. cartoonists made this joke.
Screenshot from "Tortoise Wins by a Hare," a 1943 Bugs Bunny cartoon. It's a newspaper front page, banner headline:
HARE RACES TORTOISE TODAY
Further down the page, near the fold, is a much smaller headline:
ADOLPH HITLER COMMITS SUICIDE

The thing is *Keir Starmer does not believe this*. He manifestly does not actually think that the only reason not to strip someone’s citizenship for bad speech is that you haven’t judged that it rises to the level of national security threat! It is both bonkers and pathetic that this is the message
