The IRS is looking for VITA/TCE volunteers for filing season. Last year, I said yes—and ended up preparing tax returns in rural Alaska, traveling by single-engine plane and snowmobile. ❄️ You don’t need tax experience to volunteer. Here’s more: www.taxgirl.com/2026/10/01/i...

Does anyone want to guess how many times I was called a "fuckin' Jew" and similar on my solo return on the same route, 1.0 kilometre through the homecoming crowd? I lost exact count but I have a lower bound (it's probably 1-2 higher)

There’s a lot of doom & gloom around how AI is affecting higher education. To a certain extent, I get it. AI is making some things harder. But I’ve found that AI has in some ways greatly enhanced my teaching. For one, it’s opened up applied activities that weren’t possible before. One example: 🧵

This part is EXTREMELY clear to anyone using their search function. I can put in the literal word-for-word description of a thing I bought before and it won't bring it up in the first two pages of the search. Their search function has become completely useless to me.

🚨 New WP from our Kenya RCT. Tying malaria testing subsidies and provider incentives to diagnostic results roughly tripled testing and cut unnecessary antimalarial purchases. Because patients overestimate infection risk, these contracts deliver 4x welfare gains of free testing.

Billionaire in interview with the Economist admits he was too consumed by politics and shares predictions about AI Elon Musk has admitted he became too consumed by politics during his volatile alliance with Donald Trump and his brief appointment as the president’s financial axman, running the so-called “department of government efficiency” (Doge). The world’s richest person, and briefly its first trillionaire after his SpaceX company floated on the US stock exchange in June, made the confession in a wide-ranging interview with the Economist published on Thursday.
