I would like to see more companies admit this - being a public company no longer means running a successful, thriving business. It strictly means delivering growth to investors, every single quarter, who do not care at all about the product the company sells or the people who produce it.

my belief is that at the end of the day, great games are made by groups of people who have high trust with each other & can fluidly execute a shared vision. which is a small part of why these layoffs are so devastating- it's not just about jobs, it's about these "trust structures" being torn apart.

this is also (IMO) why a lot of the covid-era fresh startups fell by the wayside- you can have a studio pedigree 20 pages deep but if there's no trust, then it's hard to really make anything. and trust takes time and continuous shared wins (and shared failures) to build; there isn't a shortcut.

This is so, so well-articulated.
People call this friction "grunt work." Schwartz uses exactly that phrase, and he's right that LLMs can remove it. What he doesn't say, because he already has decades of hard-won intuition and doesn't need the grunt work anymore, is that for someone who doesn't yet have that intuition, the grunt work is the work. The boring parts and the important parts are tangled together in a way that you can't separate in advance. You don't know which afternoon of debugging was the one that taught you something fundamental about your data until three years later, when you're working on a completely different problem and the insight surfaces. Serendipity doesn't come from efficiency. It comes from spending time in the space where the problem lives, getting your hands dirty, making mistakes that nobody asked you to make and learning things nobody assigned you to learn.

One of the more compelling data visualizations produced in recent years is the following representation of measles incidence from 1928 to 2003 by state produced by the Wall Street Journal graphics team:

Heatmap chart titled “Measles” showing reported measles cases by U.S. state over time from roughly 1930 to 2010. States are listed in rows on the left (e.g., Alaska, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, etc.), and years run along the horizontal axis. Each small square represents a state-year, colored by number of cases using a scale from light blue (near 0) through green and yellow to orange and red (highest, up to about 4,000 cases). A vertical black line around 1963 is labeled “Vaccine introduced.” Before this line, many states show frequent yellow/orange/red squares, indicating large outbreaks. After the line, the grid shifts mostly to very light blue with only occasional darker squares, indicating a sharp and sustained drop in measles cases following vaccine introduction.

In the two years after its release, many prominent data journalists, designers, and developers have analyzed/applauded the design decisions in the chart, which urge the reader to its take-home message: the introduction of the measles vaccine drastically reduced the incidence of the virus.
