I love how in 70/early 80s horror when they're like, "The devil waited for a cynical time, when society would fall apart and morals fall by the wayside." And I'm like, yeah (takes a drink), it's never getting worse for society than the 70s.

Bezos is talking about AI productivity leading to single-earner households and short work weeks, but he can just do all that right now if he really wanted to. What does he need to be more efficient at this point? Just double a bunch of people's pay right now! Literally why not?

The pundit class's notion of "free speech" is predicated on a division of humanity into those who *participate* in debates and those who are the *topic* of debate, where treating one of the former as if they were one of the latter is seen as the direst of all threats to "free speech".

Patiently waiting for the op-ed saying the right-wing base should reach out to socialists they disagree with to find common ground and heal a divided nation. I'm sure that's coming any week now.

I'm not the audience for the Smith hearing, but the main political issue here is that Republicans want the world to know that Smith subpoenaed congressional phone records as he investigated Jan. 6 etc, and nobody outside the Senate can explain to you why that's bad.

Look, there's a secretly mega-popular music genre in America that mainstream culture ignores due to snobbery, and it's called Latin music.

I remember when older people used to complain about young people saying "like" and "um" to fill space in sentences. That's roughly how I feel about the word "slop" these days.

I have no expertise on trans people, but if a democratic candidate started fear mongering or equivocating on immigrants, not only would I stay home, my mom would remember their exact words for about a decade. If somebody told me to be an adult and suck it up, I would know they're racist.

Why do people act like they need to qualify supporting Macklemore's politics by making it clear they don't think he's cool or like his music? It's okay. Nobody's asking you that.

Maybe it's just my own algorithm, but is everybody on YouTube doing a health scare now? Apparently, everything on Earth will either add or subtract 30 years from my life. If I wrap a falafel in salami, does it balance out to a net zero?

The evolution of computer mice is funny. The newest mouse is usually ultra-light, has speed-holes now, and sensitive enough to put your pointer on the literal moon. Meanwhile, I want a mouse that's large, heavy, and slow, because I have adult hands and my monitor is not a 56'' TV.

I agree that the tech backlash has a lot to do with the fact that Silicon Valley has pretty much given up on giving us cool things - and has trained us to assume that tech products that *seem* cool are probably secretly evil. I wrote about this last year:

I Just Want a Cute Robot Lamp That Isn't Evil
Apple's engineers have figured out how to design a robot lamp so adorable that everyone I've shown the video to says they'd die for it. By studying how to translate human expression into the movement...

Listen, if you’re not happy single, you won’t be happy in a relationship either, happiness comes from picking a new hobby and then buying all the things to start that hobby then finding the perfect little storage container for those things and then putting that storage container in the spare room

Stole this from the comments because this shit shouldn't be behind a paywall.
Crucially, the GLOVE has limitations, chief among them that for the device to work effectively and deliver its restraining pain shock, it must come into contact with the subject's bare skin. According to Compliant Technologies, the gloves won't work through dry clothing or thick hair. The gloves will work, however, if the subject is wearing thin, wet clothing, such as soaked T-shirts or blouses. The GLOVE also does not like being dunked in water and will likely be rendered inoperable if this happens.

The "centrist" think tank Third Way is looking to pay someone between $140,000 and $150,000 to spend their days trying to dig up dirt on DSA members. They're trying to sell this gig as "anti-extremism" work, which I find completely disgusting.
from job listing:

As the Director of Anti-Extremism, a typical day might include…

Assembling and updating a database of the DSA’s most extreme ideas and statements and a repository of voting records, affiliations, and issue positions to make available to allies and partners;
Leading public opinion research to identify and test the contrasts that move base voters away from these extreme candidates;
Overseeing the development of memos, talking points, rapid response materials, and other products that make the case against these extreme forces in American politics;
Promoting and marketing our research and materials to ensure they reach decisionmakers quickly, repeatedly, and at scale through a coordinated distribution infrastructure;
Recruiting and arming a group of young, diverse spokespeople to fight the DSA from a center-left perspective and assembling a broad coalition of organizational partners to make the case against extremism;
Running an earned media program to create a drumbeat of our message in op-eds, television appearances, podcasts, and traditional and digital media engagement.

Good morning Bluesky ☀️ My grandad told me he saw the Titanic - from the outset he warned all the people that the ship would sink, but nobody listened to him. He knew he was right and didn't give up. He warned them again & again, until eventually they kicked him out of the cinema.
The Titanic sinking under a moonlit sky.
