1/ People keep saying AI is inevitable. History disagrees. Plenty of technologies were called unstoppable, and societies stopped them or shrank them down to a niche. A thread 🧵

Given how many academics magically “pivoted to AI” when it seemed like a good career decision, it’s shocking & shameful how few are intervening in slop journalism like this. How’s this “AI”? Isn’t this just a decision tree? Why are we calling it AI? How does it work? There’s no content here, just PR

100%. This has been a problem for a long time now in UK political journalism. Every election, every decision, every bill, every vote - it's reported in terms of what it means for politicians. For this party, that PM, those MPs. Politics as sport rather than as the means to effect real-world change.

I’d love news coverage to talk about how political events will affect me as a person, rather than how it’ll impact politicians / parties. Given the nature of their political stance, the consequences of a Green Party win for *humans beings* seems more important than its effects on the Labour Party.

Over the past couple of years, I have seen Generative Al creep rapidly into the television industry, and am not fond of it.
I don't want a machine to write my scripts. I don't want a machine to make my concept art. I don't want a machine to tell my stories. And have yet to hear an argument in favour of the technology that has any actual merit to it beyond the capitalistic need for cheap and quick output with minimal input. It's here to stay' That isn't enough for me to just wave away the contributions to the climate crisis, the plagiarism and copyright issues, the *horrific* ethical consequences, the workforce ramifications, and especially importantly for me asa science communicator, the fact that it is, by and large, the world's greatest misinformation engine. For anyone else working in science TV specifically - listen to the scientists you work with. Listen to your most dedicated audiences. Listen to the artists who have historically visualised your ideas. Adoption of and excitement for this technology is nowhere near as universal as it seems.
