England is a great country, because once we name a village, that name becomes a sacred, immovable thing (however horrifying the image it conjures may be).

I think I'm about 6-8 weeks away from reading the word 'Burnham' and not still assuming they mean Bo Burnham and being momentarily confused about why Bo Burnham is committing to abolishing the triple lock.

Instinctively like “weird use of the word woman in this headline…” only to discover that the chess community believes that ‘grandmaster’ is a gendered title, and anyone female (regardless of age, apparently) is a ‘woman grandmaster’.

The devastating impacts of the pandemic, the war in Ukraine, the closure of the strait of Hormuz etc continue. The Harry Potter play producers feel that, after a decade, they can no longer charge tourists £175 twice 😢

So delighted for Gordon Brown winning MrBeast’s “who can stay in a paddling pool filled with orbeez and bat guano for 24 hours” contest. A much deserved second act 👏

The "Today's News" tab on X vs the BBC News homepage. But people on X will tell you (over and over and over and over) that the BBC is no longer a serious news organisation.

"One of the worst things in the world is being spat on," the Millwall v West Ham commentator just said. Let it never be said that the football community is out of touch.

Wrote about the new Miss Marple continuation novel (the headline does not quite represent the review)...

Real Agatha Christie fans won't be fooled by the new Miss Marple
The bestselling thriller writer Lucy Foley has resurrected the spinster sleuth for a series of new novels. But did the character really need another outing?

No disrespect to this bloke’s family who are obviously grieving, but what is the point of this BBC push notification? Like, what is the suggestion here? That the police should not investigate crimes?

This is a press release about six very famous people, and one woman who said “faithful, faithful, not sure, traitor, traitor, faithful, traitor, faithful, faithful, faithful, that's it!" on The Traitors.

It is absurd to have a 'finale' to 7 Up. We should have followed them to the grave, and beyond.

Was the line-up for this festival always so mental? Mariana Mazzucato, Bryan Johnson, Louis Theroux, Dasha Nekrasova, Kwasi Kwarteng, the guy from Rizzle Kicks. This is rage bait booking.

My most egregiously Westminster-pilled brainworm is thinking to myself “truly a GOVErnment of all the talents - welcome Michael” any time I see Michael Gove doing anything. No longer even sure if that’s the real wording of the tweet, or if the tweet ever even happened.

It reminds me of how the advertising industry had a period of trying to commission “viral videos”. Like, virality was a consequence of excellence (or notoriety), not something you could design.

I fear this Reform undercover sting may not actually be a runner. The Times and Telegraph are barely touching it (for obvious reasons), and the BBC seems pretty equivocal. The Guardian and Independent are leading on it, but that's probably a badge of honour to people on the right.

Hopefully they'll be able to repurpose the words for the new slogan: lead to conviction.

tfw when the really lovely bloke you just met, who always asks how you're feeling, calls you "mate" without flinching, and even comes out for pints on "a school night" turns out to be an undercover journalist

I'm so psyched for this new rom-com from the great Paul Mayhew-Archer, co-writer of Vicar of Dibley and (more importantly by far!) co-host of our podcast, Movers & Shakers. It's a story about living with Parkinson's – which also happens to be the strapline of our show!

Steven Bartlett's continued presence on Dragon's Den is, for me, indicative of the BBC's current structural failing: a misguided attempt to solicit mythical Gen Z audiences, at the expense of proper, rigorous journalism.

The podcaster's longstanding role on Dragons' Den shows how morally bankrupt modern media has become

The BBC has been live-streaming the ascension of Hakon VIII for over an hour now (it is mainly holding shots of this building). What percentage of Brits even know that Norway has a king? But sure, cancel Newsnight.

I’m now seeing a bunch of accounts who think that that the lesson learned from the Jason Arday tragedy is to try and whip up a dogpile on a bunch of journalists. Some of these are just young news reporters, whose commissioning will have been driven by the public frenzy.

I wonder how soon Laurence Fox will start to blame his abject failure in right-wing demagoguery on some sort of oblique diversity agenda amongst ethnonationalists. Doesn't leave much space to pivot into, I'll concede, but those who can't do... pass the buck to some sort of internal conspiracy.

Jason Arday learning the same lesson as the Salt Path lady before him: that the British public have an insatiable appetite for humiliating minor celebrities they'd barely heard of a few days ago, and the media are massively incentivised to drip-feed revelations like a hamster's water bottle.

Am I missing something with this story? What happened to Meredith Kercher was terrible, but what happened to Amanda Knox was also really bad. Her entire life continues to be shaped by decades-old tabloid gossip, and even if I find her later career a bit weird, surely it's her story to tell?

One Hundred Years of Solitude is not an easy book to adapt for TV. Netflix has done a pretty impressive job, and yet something remains lost in translation.

The author of 100 Years of Solitude was right. His novel is unfilmable
Netflix series fails to capture the porous border between magic and reality, so brilliantly portrayed in Gabriel García Márquez’s 1967 novel
