"The average SNAP benefit across the U.S. is about $6.25 per person per day, or roughly $190 per month, according to FRAC. That isn't enough to cover a typical meal in about 99% of U.S. counties, according to a 2025 analysis from the nonpartisan Urban Institute."

This is truly amazing—RFK Jr openly, gladly, joyfully telling people that under his leadership of the US health system, actual public health expertise, training, & experience is no longer needed. All that’s needed to lead the US health agencies is a past history of being a right wing blogger!

very appropriately, this phrasing predates Newton by more than half of a millennium #TIL
Early references
Middle Ages
The earliest documented attestation of this aphorism appears in 1123 in William of Conches's Glosses on Priscian's Institutiones grammaticae.[4] Where Priscian says quanto juniores, tanto perspicaciores (young men simply can see more sharply), William comments:

The ancients had only the books which they themselves wrote, but we have all their books and moreover all those which have been written from the beginning until our time.… Hence we are like a dwarf perched on the shoulders of a giant. The former sees further than the giant, not because of his own stature, but because of the stature of his bearer. Similarly, we [moderns] see more than the ancients, because our writings, modest as they are, are added to their great works.[5]

Several people are mad about this so I will briefly clarify! No, I’m not saying a novel is comparable to a real-life assault in any way. No, I’m not saying the author is bad or responsible for bad things. I am saying I’ve seen real bad stuff come from “consensual” student-faculty relationships.

"to ease administrative burden"
To maintain members’ privacy about where they stay, and ease the program’s administrative burden, House officials decided not to require receipts.

That means the reimbursements operate on an honor system, though members cannot expense more than the daily rate that the federal government allows employees to spend on lodging, meals and incidentals while traveling in the Washington area.

For 2025, that rate fluctuated between $183 and $276 per day for lodging, depending on the month, and was $92 per day for meals and incidentals.

It’s, um…interesting that the documentation req’d by disadvantaged folks to access social safety net programs - in the interest of “accountability” to ensure no improper use - is not req’d by the very politicians who rail about the need to be responsible with taxpayer dollars.

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

Although additional details of the system were not revealed at trial, subsequent reporting by 404 Media revealed that Schott most likely was identified by a federal predictive policing unit working out of a so-called fusion center in Laredo that used artificial intelligence to identify him as a likely criminal.

“Homeland Security, DEA, everybody’s there,” Dep. Joel Babb, who pulled Schott over, said in a pre-trial deposition. “And they have a lot bigger toys than a license plate reader.”

fter receiving the WhatsApp message, Babb waited for Schott’s truck to appear, eventually pulling him over for crossing the yellow shoulder line. Schott’s dashboard camera showed him staying inside his lane and the deputy later admitted it was just a pretext to look inside the vehicle.

“The beautiful thing about the Texas traffic code is there’s thousands of things you can stop a vehicle for,” he later testified. After detaining Schott for more than an hour, and doing more than $7,000-worth of damage to his truck during their search, Bexar deputies’ interrogation and search turned up nothing. Yet Molina wrote on his report that they had seen specks of marijuana leaves. If so, nothing was ever collected or tested or mentioned on any body camera footage, Molina later conceded. The interdiction team was so unsuccessful that Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar had joked about it. While the deputies made hundreds of stops, “I would rib them about not being very effective at drug interdiction, not finding drugs very often,” he said in a deposition.
