It is literally incredible to me that anyone denies there has been an increase of antisemitism in leftish spaces. There has been one across the board; I see things daily in spaces that shock me. The ways so many elements in our coalition play footsy with your Tucker Carlson types scares me.

4/ Fernando Vasquez, an 18-year-old citizen, was on break from work when agents chased and handcuffed him, then put him in their truck. After realizing their mistake, the agents left the teen alone in the woods, with no way to get home. Then they threw his ID out of the truck.

I think @amandamarcotte.bsky.social is really onto something here and that it's related to something @polphilpod.bsky.social has said in a few places; what collapsed was not liberalism, which in some ways is more strongly felt and committed to by more people than ever, but conservatism

I think one of the core mechanisms of this is the sense that "everybody knows" certain things. People really struggle to resist believing what "everybody knows", and they invest heavily once they're bought in, and nothing encouraging or helpful ever becomes what "everybody knows" on social media.

For me this is the most reliable effect of exposure to Twitter among people who don't go explicitly to the right; they become absolutely convinced that everything is shit, everything is getting worse, everything is going to hell, everyone is bad. And in this regard Bluesky is not that much better.

A good fresh Star Trek take on those fake isekai title jokes
A tumblr screenshot showing a post and two reblog responses, reading:
1. "star trek would be the ideal fictional universe to get trapped in because you'd explain your situation and they'd be like yeah makes sense. no further questions. fortunately we can use the mysterious warp signature emitting from this system's icy moon to counterface with the solar radiation and slingshot you back home"
2. "I'm from a universe where your world is all a work of fiction." Benjamin Sisko, nodding. "That happened to me once."
3. "I Got Isekaid Into The Star Trek Universe And They Quickly Understood What Was Happening"

Right now the problem seems to be that populations in democratic countries experience a general malaise about the world, and the far right provides narratives, even nonsensical ones, that seem to have an instinctive appeal with a significant chunk of the electorate, so they get to play on easy mode.

We would all have better conversations about Zionism if we viewed it as a nationalism like all others, akin to diaspora Serbian nationalism from Canadian Serbs. Not a civil rights or social justice cause, but also not a way Jewish people are abnormal or ontologically evil.

This is a big part of what I mean when I say that our current crisis is the result of a catastrophic collapse in our self-respect. If this really happened, what do you think you would do about it? If your answer is "nothing", I don't believe you. Remember your pride and ask yourself again.

I am watching LITTLE NEMO because I watched it a lot as a kid and have no sense of whether it was any good. I remember it having a very small measure of the terrible power any good movie about dreams should have, but fifteen minutes in it's not doing much for me. Most art about dreams is so empty.

I think for me the thing that makes it impossible to support the death penalty is the thought of living your life waiting for that moment, and especially the way the last few days would feel, as it approached. How it would feel to know it's today. I can't want that for someone. It's too much.

The thing about the florid apocalypticism you sometimes encounter on this site is that a lot of people are less horrified by literal civilizational collapse than by the notion that our descendents are just going to keep muddling through and in less than a century nobody will remember us.

I think about this interview with the distinguished philosopher Conan O'Brien a lot. I actually think this is a healthy way to live your life! www.nytimes.com/2019/01/14/a...
Is this how you want to go out, with a show that gets smaller and smaller until it’s gone?

Maybe that’s O.K. I think you have more of a problem with that than I do. [Laughs.] At this point in my career, I could go out with a grand, 21-gun salute, and climb into a rocket and the entire Supreme Court walks out and they jointly press a button, I’m shot up into the air and there’s an explosion and it’s orange and it spells, “Good night and God love.” In this culture? Two years later, it’s going to be, who’s Conan? This is going to sound grim, but eventually, all our graves go unattended.

You’re right, that does sound grim.

Sorry. Calvin Coolidge was a pretty popular president. I’ve been to his grave in Vermont. It has the presidential seal on it. Nobody was there. And by the way, I’m the only late-night host that has been to Calvin Coolidge’s grave. I think that’s what separates me from the other hosts.

I had a great conversation with Albert Brooks once. When I met him for the first time, I was kind of stammering. I said, you make movies, they live on forever. I just do these late-night shows, they get lost, they’re never seen again and who cares? And he looked at me and he said, [Albert Brooks voice] “What are you talking about? None of it matters.” None of it matters? “No, that’s the secret. In 1940, people said Clark Gable is the face of the 20th Century. Who [expletive] thinks about Clark Gable? It doesn’t matter. You’ll be forgotten. I’ll be forgotten. We’ll all be forgotten.” It’s so funny because you’d think that would depress me. I was walking on air after that.

It's frustrating that one of my constant worries when I'm writing is that I will never find a good solution to the current problem, despite my belief that in general I do. (My feeling is mostly that problems matter until you make the book sufficiently beautiful, at which point they stop.)

My depression *also* tells *me* every day that the world is ending, which is why I work hard every day to see and internalize it when I see evidence to the contrary. It's bad to let your mood disorder lie to you unobstructed all day! The world is *changing*, sometimes for the better, sometimes not.

This is true, and I would like the well-meaning people among those who have persuaded themselves "woke 1" was nonsense to consider what implications it might have for that belief. Most attacks on wokeness haven't been about any of the actual "excesses", they've been about kindness and decency.
