Side note: This is not only another very bad result for the CDU, but for the centre-right in general. The FDP doesn't even factor anymore. 1% in MV and likely no more than 2-3% in Berlin. Looks like the populist rebirth of the Free Democrats isn't quite going to plan.

Merz just spoke at a press conference. To the best of my knowledge, a chancellor has never commented on exit polls for state elections that quickly. He defends his reform agenda and that he intends to deliver these reforms as CDU leader and chancellor. Let's see whether his party & SPD agree...

The CDU at only 5.5% in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Its worst result in the party's history. Merz is expected to speak later today. I honestly can't see how he can stay on.

The CDU is polling at 6% in the last FWG poll for Sunday's election in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. This would be catastrophic for the CDU. As a reminder: Its worst state election result was 9% in Bremen - in 1951(!). Honestly hard to imagine how Merz could stay if that ends up being the result...

In the 90s S-A saw the best result of a far-right party in Germany before the AfD. 13% for the DVU in 1998. S-A should not be the basis for sweeping conclusion about the electoral sociology of the AfD. The consequences might be far-reaching but your reporting will contribute to these consequences.

First exit poll Saxony-Anhalt, and it's going to be a nail biter. The far right by far expected to become the largest party, but it's too close to call whether AfD will have an absolute majority. Whether BSW will enter parliament will be something to watch. CDU collapsed, SPD also historically poor.
