New paper: "Climate information use and needs for urban heat adaptation in Hamburg and Barcelona"🎉 Two years ago I got some scepticism when I said I was studying heat adaptation in Hamburg. After this summer, the sceptics are convinced. We interviewed 42 heat adaptation stakeholders in HH and BCN.

In 2024 and 2025, a spring drought hit Northern Germany, an extreme rainfall event led to severe flooding in Southern Germany, and a heatwave affected all of Germany. We find that people misestimate how frequently such events occur in the current climate with around 1.3°C of global warming.

The London Ambulance Service responded to the highest number of life-threatening emergencies in its history on Wednesday.

Temperatures soared to 36.1C in parts of the UK on Wednesday, and that record for June has been broken again today.

Ambulance crews responded to 642 calls relating to category 1 incidents - those that include the most serious, life-threatening injuries and illnesses such as cardiac arrests and patients who are not breathing.

Chief Executive Jason Killens KAM said this was "driven by the extreme heat across London".

Leaders around the world are banking on tech advances to solve climate change. One leading idea involves capturing carbon pollution from the air and then burying it underground forever. It sounds practical. Here’s why there's no conceivable way it can work: (THREAD)

We often say this heat wave is a glimpse of our future. That's true, but it's only part of the story. Conditions like these will become more common, but even more intense heat waves will then emerge, with worsening impacts on people and ecosystems. Graphic from climate.copernicus.eu/esotc/2025/t...
Graphic showing heat stress days are increasing while cold stress days decline in Europe for a few metrics. This is for the average number of heat stress days, tropical nights, and cold stress days in Europe from the WMO RA VI since 1980.

📈Why is there is upward trend in billion-dollar disasters? 1. There is a growing number of people, homes, and businesses exposed to these hazards. 2. Climate change is causing an increase in frequency and intensity of certain types of extreme weather. That's a bad combo.

Qianjiadong Reservoir in southern Hunan, China, produces a double harvest: solar energy and yellow carp. The solar farm produces up to 80 megawatts of power while the fish forage beneath the panels. With a massive scale-up of solar and wind at home and cheap exports of the technology, China is driving a worldwide surge of renewable energy—Science’s 2025 Breakthrough of the Year.
