2/2 🧵👉 Authoritarian, But Not Nativist - @aborges75.bsky.social & @lisazanottiphd.bsky.social examine how far-right parties in Latin America compare to their Western European counterparts. Read OPEN ACCESS: buff.ly/cHyT0LR #polsci #polsky #LatinAmericanPolitics #FarRightPolitics
Abstract
Research on far-right parties has mostly focused on Western Europe, where anti-immigration agendas and related nativist ideas have played a major role in right-wing radicalization. In this article, we analyze the rise of the far right in Latin America, a region where immigration has been much less prominent in public debates. Drawing on the 2020 Chapell Hill Expert Survey, we propose to assess the extent to which Latin American far-right parties fit existing conceptualizations that identify nativism and authoritarianism as the core characteristics of this party family. Given the relative unimportance of nativism as a distinguishing feature of cases of right-wing extremism/radicalism in the region, we propose a more parsimonious conceptualization of the far right. We also develop a typological classification and find that authoritarian-fundamentalist parties that embrace an extreme form of religious conservatism are the most common subtype of far-right party in Latin America.

New book out 🔥 The Fascist Zeitgeist. Authoritarian Legacies and the Iberian Far Right. (Elements in the History and Politics of Fascism @universitypress.cambridge.org) How is the success of the Iberian far right linked to the memory of Franco and Salazar? doi.org/10.1017/9781009588072
The image shows, on the right half, the book's cover, with fascist architecture from Rome, which is the signature image used by the series on "The History and Politics of Fascism". The left half of the image shows the book's back, that includes the following summary:
The far right is achieving unprecedented electoral success, even in countries once considered immune such as Spain and Portugal. For decades, the stigma surrounding the long dictatorships of António Salazar and Francisco Franco seemed to inoculate the Iberian Peninsula against far-right mobilisation, yet Chega and VOX have shown that collective memory evolves – and stigma fades. This Element argues that understanding the far right's global rise requires attention to authoritarian nostalgia: a longing for an idealised authoritarian past. When activated by credible political actors with sufficient media visibility, this sentiment can generate support for far-right movements even in societies with a collective memory firmly condemning their authoritarian past. Using original survey data, the Element shows how contemporary far-right forces mobilise the ghosts of authoritarianism to erode democratic norms, revealing the enduring power of collective memory in shaping political behaviour.

Side note: This is not only another very bad result for the CDU, but for the centre-right in general. The FDP doesn't even factor anymore. 1% in MV and likely no more than 2-3% in Berlin. Looks like the populist rebirth of the Free Democrats isn't quite going to plan.

Matthias Dilling @matthiasdilling.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
Not sure. Most people don't negate that reforms are needed, but regardless of what we think about the substance of the reforms, Merz did not communicate them well. Dissociating itself from a deeply unpopular chancellor might be a more promising strategy for the government than to just keep going.

Matthias Dilling @matthiasdilling.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Yes, absolutely, it will be difficult politically. Institutionally, though, the constructive vote of no confidence gives a clear mechanism to replace Merz. It would also allow CDU/CSU and SPD to continue the coalition and hope that a new chancellor might revive their standing in the polls.
110
Matthias Dilling @matthiasdilling.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
While certainly not ideal, it's also not unprecedented that there is no obvious successor for Merz. When the CDU replaced Erhard, there were initially also several prominent candidates (Barzel, Schroeder, Gerstenmaier; if I recall correctly).
010
Matthias Dilling @matthiasdilling.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Hard to say, but those two would also be my guess. Interestingly, neither of them are currently members of the Bundestag. But then, Kiesinger was chancellor without a Bundestag mandate. It's not that this would be unprecedented.
110
Matthias Dilling @matthiasdilling.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
I don't see early elections in Germany. It's more likely that they'll replace Merz with somebody they hope will be more popular and a better communicator.

Matthias Dilling @matthiasdilling.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Now looking like the CDU is not even making it into parliament. Currently at 4.9%, with nearly all districts counted. It would be the first time for the party to fail to clear the 5%-threshold.
130
Matthias Dilling @matthiasdilling.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
I think he also wanted to make clear early that he is not willing to resign. So, any change that would follow would come against his will and would basically need to be an internal rebellion against a sitting chancellor. This makes it harder for those who want to replace him.

Matthias Dilling @matthiasdilling.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
I think he is trying to get ahead of the narrative before the speculations start or somebody else from within CDU/CSU says something. The only thing he can do at this stage, but I don't think that it will work...

The CDU is polling at 6% in the last FWG poll for Sunday's election in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. This would be catastrophic for the CDU. As a reminder: Its worst state election result was 9% in Bremen - in 1951(!). Honestly hard to imagine how Merz could stay if that ends up being the result...

True. Barzel in opposition. In gov't, the 1989 failed attempt against Kohl, Adenauer & Erhard some time ago and under the context you mentioned. AKK as leader but not chancellor. The point on the coalition partner is well taken. SPD would take Wuest over Merz but would not walk from the coalition.

Maybe contrary to popular belief, the CDU does do putsches against its own leader. Several leaders in its history had to go when internal factional arrangements shifted - often in response to election results much less stark than today's. It'll be tight for Merz.
