João Abel Manta, the greatest cartoonist of the Portuguese democratization, has died. When I published my first academic book in English on Salazar's "Estado Novo" I asked him one of his caricatures for the cover. The publisher's designer converted the caricature of the Dictator into a negative.

Survey on the attitudes towards democracy in Portugal. in a nutshell: satisfied with April 25th, dissatisfied its functioning today. The themes of dissatisfaction are classic, notably perception of corruption, but the fear of "party extremism" is new and interesting. Report bellow.

My dear friend Diogo Ramada Curto passed away this Saturday. An excellent historical sociologist, he held for eight years the Vasco da Gama Chair in the History of European Expansion at the European University Institute, Florence. He was director of the National Library of Portugal since 2024.

"The single biggest influence on The Sympathizer was António Lobo Antunes’ The Land at the End of the World" says Viet Thanh Nguyen. I was not aware of this influence because The Sympathizer is one of the best novels I've read in the last couple of years.
