The largest funeral in Gaza history is being held today as the remains of 112 people from a single clan are laid to rest after being buried in rubble for three years. More than 300 people were killed in the strike by Israel, including 44 children and 37 women. The others were vaporized.

This is something of a revolution in paradiplomacy! Traditionally and obviously NYC has been zealously symbolically pro Israel (even if tacitly willing to facilitate the UN and work with eg Palestinian delegations). This is reminiscent of boycotts against South Africa…a big blow to Netanyahu

This shows just how farcical constructions of 'terrorism' are, and how they exist to criminalise dissent. But to be clear: these constructions are no better when the average terror suspect is a brown or black man in his 20s - the accceptance of which paved the way for our current predicament.

Article "Protests in the United States on Palestine & Israel, 2023–2024" in Social Movement Studies, 25(2), 234–247 (2006) vital work by Erica Chenoweth, Soha Hammam, Jeremy Pressman & Jay Ulfelder www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.... Does anyone know of similar empirical studies of the UK protests?
Abstract; From 7 October 2023 to 7 June 2024, the Crowd Counting Consortium recorded nearly 12,400 pro-Palestine protests and over 2,000 pro-Israel protests in the United States. Since January 2017, when CCC first started counting protest events and their crowd sizes, the current pro-Palestine protest wave involves the largest, most sustained US protests sparked by a foreign event. We hypothesize three possible reasons for the size of the pro-Palestine mobilization: casualties and suffering motivate protestors and the Palestinian casualties have been much higher; protestors react to the US government’s position, which in this case strongly favors Israel; and protestors are driven by emotional outrage at Israeli policy and the resultant Palestinian suffering. By looking at property damage and police injuries, we also conclude that this pro-Palestine movement has not been violent. That is true of both the national protest wave in general and of the student encampments in spring 2024 in particular. The rhetorical core of this pro-Palestine movement has not been a call for violence against Jews, but rather a call for freedom for Palestinians and an end to violence being inflicted upon them. To substantiate this point, we considered two sources of evidence: 1) the banners, signs, and chants seen or heard at pro-Palestine events; 2) the demands issued by organizers of over 100 student encampments. One caveat: Although we use the terms pro-Israel and pro-Palestine as shorthand, we acknowledge that these binary terms are unsatisfying and misleading.

With the resurgent interest in the nexus between policy and knowledge production, here is our open access article "The impact of colonialism on policy and knowledge production in International Relations" in @iajournal.bsky.social: academic.oup.com/ia/article/9....
Abstract: Is there an academic–policy divide, and does that gap need to be bridged? For decades, International Relations (IR) scholars have reflected on their roles and responsibilities towards the ‘real world’, while policy-makers have often critiqued the detachment of academic research. In response, there have been increased calls for academics to descend from their ‘ivory tower’. However, the articles in this 100th anniversary special issue of International Affairs interrogate this so-called theory–policy divide and problematize the exchange of knowledge between academics and practitioners, highlighting the colonial underpinnings of their historical entanglements. In this introductory article we bring together the core arguments of the special issue contributions to delineate three prominent dynamics in the academic–practitioner nexus: the role of academia as a supplier of knowledge for colonial policies; the influence of imperial practice and policy-makers in shaping IR and academic knowledge production; and the contestation from academics and/or practitioners against racial hierarchies in knowledge production and policy-making. Confronting the exclusions, amnesias and denials of colonialism in the theory and practice of International Relations is the necessary first step in any process of repair towards a more just and viable politics.

With unwavering US support under both Biden and Trump, is it any surprise that Netanyahu concluded that Israel can bomb virtually anyone and anywhere in the Middle East, with impunity? — my latest for @theguardian.com | www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
Text extract from Guardian article:

"For two years after the October 2023 attacks, Netanyahu undermined ceasefire talks with Hamas in Gaza and blocked potential deals by adding new conditions or changing his mind at the last minute. He also tried to stall negotiations by assassinating Hamas leaders involved in the talks, and even ordered a brazen Israeli airstrike on Hamas officials meeting in Qatar, a US ally, to consider a ceasefire proposal that had been submitted by Israel and Washington.

Despite Netanyahu's obstinance, Israel continued to receive unconditional political support and tens of billions of dollars in US weapons, under both Joe Biden's administration and Trump's. Is it any surprise that Netanyahu concluded that Israel can bomb virtually anyone and anywhere in the Middle East, with impunity? By late 2025, Israel had attacked Iran, Lebanon, Syria, Qatar and Yemen that year - without losing the flow of US weapons or Washington's political cover at the United Nations and other international institutions. Of course, Israel's genocidal war on Gaza, which killed at least 70,000
Palestinians and instigated a famine, paved the way for Israel to flout international law."

Secondary effects. Asia's investors reconsidering investments in the UAE. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...
Asian wealth has become a significant driver of that expansion. About a quarter of the 2,270-plus foundations set up in the UAE have Asian ownership, according to Yann Mrazek, managing partner at Dubai-based wealth advisory firm M/HQ. Asia accounted for 47% of all multinational companies attracted by the Dubai International Chamber in 2025, according to a statement by the entity.

Firms from Tokyo-based Nomura Holdings Inc., as well as DBS Group Holdings Ltd., and Oversea-Chinese Banking Corp. - Singapore’s two largest lenders - have expanded their operations in Dubai to cater to rising demand from the wealthy.

The war is now forcing a reassessment for many Asian families.

“It’s definitely a wake-up call,” said Felix Lai, principal of Hong Kong-based multi-family office JMS Group. “People might need to rethink their decision to move to the Middle East with their family and money, though it is too early to make a decision.”
