Unless I‘m missing something, it looks very unlikely that Muresan will get anywhere close to enough MPs to support his minority government at the investiture vote tomorrow and this has been clear for some time, so it‘s a bit of a puzzle to me why we are going through the motions here.

That was overall a good speech from Burnham with some big ideas including electoral reform, social care reform and an open-ended relationship with the EU. The strategy here is to set out a bold progressive agenda, but leave implementation for after an election (or when there is fiscal room re care).

Might be a bit controversial, but a party that counts amongst its potential Presidential candidates politicians of the caliber of Ossoff and AOC is maybe not quite as badly in crisis as it appears. There is a talented millennial generation ready to lead.

Much is made of state specific reasons, but the CDU's losses are perfectly in line with national polls that have them at around 20%. MV was one of their weakest states to start (despite Merkel's former constituency being there). While levels are different, both MV & Berlin moved in parallel: -8%p.

Florian Foos @florianfoos.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Side note: This is not only another very bad result for the CDU, but for the centre-right in general. The FDP doesn't even factor anymore. 1% in MV and likely no more than 2-3% in Berlin. Looks like the populist rebirth of the Free Democrats isn't quite going to plan.

Now more likely than not that the CDU will fail to cross the 5% threshold in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania. This is consistent with the ongoing count.

Merz speaking early & decisively after the exit polls was obviously meant to end any debate about his position(s) before they properly started. The problem is that as the night unfolds, the CDU’s scores in both states have weakened and the CDUs position looks more fragile than predicted in exits.

Very much off topic, but wondering where the unacceptable practice of restaurants and pubs in Germany to serve industrial frozen fries comes from. How hard is it to cut and deep fry potatoes? Nowhere in the world have I seen this practiced at such a scale as in Germany.

The problem is it won’t get better for Merz from here. There are two further state elections in 2 weeks, one in Berlin where the CDU is likely to lose power and one in another East German state (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern), where the party is currently polling close to single digits.

ZDF has now updated their forecast and it looks like BSW will be in (ARD has also slightly adjusted their score for them upwards). That means there would likely be a razor thin majority for AfD + BSW. Pre-election, Wagenknecht claimed that BSW won’t vote in a AfD PM- they favoured a technocratic PM.

Very likely, part of the story of the CDU losses is also CDU supporters voting for SPD or Greens to make sure they get over the 5% threshold. The radicalisation of the right is there – but at the same time, part of the centre-right is also ready to vote for the centre-left to stop the far right.

Florian Foos @florianfoos.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
With the big caveat that these are vote (& turnout) recalls, the exit polls suggest that the vast majority of gains for the AfD came from mobilizing former non-voters and converting CDU voters. This would be consistent with the aggregate changes in vote shares & big increase in turnout.

Excellent speech and policy by Burnham in Kyiv and also good to make the comparison with Britain standing alone against Nazi Germany for a year in 1940/41. The only difference is that Ukraine has stood against the Russian aggressor with British 1940/41-style allies support for far longer now.

While a lot of commentary focuses on candidates, they miss that extreme right voting runs deep in Saxony Anhalt. Its predecessor state Anhalt during the Weimar Republic was the first state governed by the NSDAP following the 1932 state election (41% of votes, in coalition with nationalist DNVP!).

Assistant Professor of Quantitative Political Methodology (Tenure-Track)
The Department of Political Science at Northwestern University invites applications for a full-time position in Quantitative Political Methodology at the rank of Assistant Professor, tenure-track, to begin Fall 2027. We emphasize methodology with a strongly applied perspective: successful candidates will maintain an active, independent research program that includes methodological contributions in their own right, while also teaching quantitative research methods courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels and applying those methods to substantive questions in their area of expertise. We are especially interested in candidates whose work bridges data-driven/computational approaches with design-based inference, though we welcome applicants making cutting-edge contributions in either of these traditions or in other areas of political methodology. Successful candidates' substantive research agendas may be in any area of political science or may cross boundaries; as with all Northwestern faculty, successful candidates will be expected to provide service to the department, the university, and the profession.Aerial photo of Northwestern's beautiful lakeside campus with political science's new building circled
