Abstract
The study of far-right protests has predominantly focused on actors: who is organizing and who
is participating in contentious events. However, this actor-centered approach faces three
conceptual and methodological problems. First, recent research on the normalization and
mainstreaming of the far right stresses that nativist and authoritarian ideas, discourses, and
practices expand well beyond specific far-right actors. Second, far-right actors may deliberately
hide their presence in protest crowds. Third, description biases in media failing to identify farright actors as such present a serious source problem for researchers studying protests. This
research note argues that these problems demand an analytical shift: from an exclusively actorcentered framework toward a comprehensive approach that integrates both the organizational
and the ideational dimensions of contention. We propose that far-right protest should be
defined and operationalized not only by who is participating but by what is articulated - the
nativist and authoritarian claims, frames, and issues raised in protest events. We illustrate our
argument with empirical observations from cases of far-right contention in Germany and Italy.
We conclude by identifying avenues for future research on the normalization of the far right in
contentious politics.

IN NEW ISSUE: Can mainstreaming of the far right help normalise undemocratic practices? @mlorimer.bsky.social & Cavallaro explore the case of Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy, showing how the party still displays elements of continuity with its neofascist predecessor. OPEN ACCESS: buff.ly/vzjuT1y
Abstract
The mainstreaming of the far right is a defining feature of European politics, raising concerns that incorporating far right parties into democratic politics could lead to the normalisation of undemocratic ideas. This paper explores this contention in the case of Brothers of Italy, a radical right party with extreme right roots. Conceptualising mainstreaming as the result of moderation or normalisation, it assesses whether Brothers of Italy can facilitate the normalisation of undemocratic ideas. The analysis evaluates ideological, organisational and symbolic continuity and change between Brothers of Italy and its predecessors: the extreme right Italian Social Movement and the conservative National Alliance. Drawing on the quantitative and qualitative analysis of party programmes, the study finds limited ideological continuity, suggesting restricted potential for normalising extremism. However, continuity in party personnel and narratives highlights ongoing organisational and symbolic links, indicating that Brothers of Italy may still indirectly contribute to the normalisation of extremism.

Abstract
Recently, the socio- economic agenda of populist radical right parties (PRRPs) has attracted growing scholarly interest, yet many studies focus specifically on positions on welfare policies. It is often argued that economic issues are of secondary importance to PRRPs, or that their
positions are deliberately blurred to maximize electoral appeal. This article qualifies these assumptions by showing that PRRPs' economic policies are underpinned by a more consistent ideological logic than is commonly acknowledged. Drawing on a longitudinal qualitative
analysis of four established PRRPs in Belgium, France, Italy and the Netherlands, we examine party positions across five economic policy domains. We find that PRRPs combine pro-market commitments with nationalist-protectionist elements. These issue positions are rendered
coherent through a recurring repertoire of interpretative
frames – economic chauvinism, populism and producerism – which operate as higher-level justificatory schemata. These frames provide an enduring discursive structure through which PRRPs reconcile flexibility in
policy content with ideological coherence.

Network diagram on a dark green background titled "The Birthplace Map: World Cup 2026 Squads," with the subtitle "node size = degree (players + countries connected)." Gold circles represent the 48 World Cup nations and smaller grey-green circles represent countries that only supplied players without fielding their own team, positioned roughly according to real-world geography (Americas on the left, Africa and Europe in the center, Asia and Oceania on the right). Curved green lines connect birth countries to the nations players represent, with thicker lines indicating more players. France is the largest node by far, connected to 15 countries totaling 76 players, including thick lines to Algeria, Haiti, Senegal, Congo DR, and Côte d'Ivoire. The Netherlands is the second-largest hub, with an especially thick line to Curaçao (26 players). Other notable hubs include Germany, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Morocco, and the United Kingdom (split into England and Scotland). A legend at the bottom explains the gold/grey node colors and the line-width scale; a footer credits the source as worldcup.csv, 1,248 squad entries, 282 cross-border players.
