So who "won" the Swedish election? Narratives after parliamentary elections are hard. The center right gained support but will lose power, and the Social Democrats lost support but will gain power. The radical right Sweden Democrats are the clear loser, losing support and power.

🚨New paper out in JEPP @jeppjournal.bsky.social 🎉 Women are underrepresented in local politics, and the problem isn't only their election but retention. In a survey experiment with 500+ English councillors, we find that family-friendly council policies increase women's static ambition. 🧵

The picture shows the article abstract: Women’s representation in European local governments remains stagnant at around one-third of councillors. One explanation for this longstanding gender gap relates to structural barriers blocking the supply of women candidates, including working practices which are not compatible with caring responsibilities. Yet, so far we do not know whether measures governments can implement to remedy this, including reimbursing care expenses and remote working, increase women’s political ambition. To answer this question, the study uses a survey experiment fielded to local councillors in England (N = 534). The survey manipulates exposure to a bundled set of family-friendly policies in a hypothetical council to identify the causal effect of such policies on static political ambition (councillors’ willingness to run for their current level of office), and explores heterogeneous effects by gender. The introduction of family-friendly policies significantly increases women’s, but not men’s, willingness to run for office again. Analysis of open-ended survey responses further reveals that women councillors more frequently brought up the difficulty of balancing care and work with a political role, while men were less likely to mention this. Overall, the study contributes new evidence about the important role that family policies might play in closing gender gaps in political ambition.

ABSTRACT:
US Americans are divided along party lines, both in politics and personal relationships. While prior research shows a preference for dating co-partisans, it remains unclear why people prefer to date co-partisans and for whom the effects are strongest. Therefore, we examine whether perceived character quality of a potential partner, perceived similarity, and expected social approval mediate the effects of matching and non-matching political party on romantic interest and whether effects vary by gender and party combinations. We conducted an online dating experiment with US American partisans and partisan leaners aged 20–33 (N = 1,097). Respondents viewed six fictional dating profiles that randomly included ‘Democrat’, ‘Republican’, or no political information. Results show that romantic interest was largely driven by preference against out-partisans, rather than for co-partisans. Out-partisan rejection was driven by perceived similarity, followed by expected social approval and perceived character quality, while co-partisan preference was driven by perceived similarity and, to a lesser extent, perceived quality. The in-group preference was strongest for Republican men and women, while out-group rejection was strongest for Democratic women. Overall, our findings show that people use politics as a proxy for non-political characteristics. They also highlight the importance of distinguishing between in-party preference and out-party animosity.
