Thanks for writing this up. I am about to embark on the same path so it’s good to know it’s not bad. (I will be migrating about 8 people in my family, some to Apple passwords the rest to Bitwarden.)

@greatdismal.bsky.social i just reread Pattern Recognition (at least the fifth read for me). Thank you for such a great book (and for so many others). I am traveling a bit, so those parts land, but the mirror world blending into “normal” hits too. But mostly, I just love reading it.

Yeah I just did this last week, day before a flight. Have a bunch of warm clothing next to your bed, plus an extra blanket or two. I shivered all night. Then I felt like crap the next day. Plan to nap.

I know we’re all thinking about what happened at Cornell. But I also can’t stop thinking about Emma Sulkowicz and all the other young women forced to carry that weight. Read my column at the newsletter 💜

This is *the* piece. Kate Manne, professor of philosophy at Cornell, speaks truth to the totality of failures at the university — and why students protesting the war in Gaza have faced far harsher consequences than any of the Cornell 7: www.thecut.com/article/what...

What It Feels Like at Cornell Right Now
As a professor at the Ivy League school, Kate Manne has known many, many victims. There’s a palpable feeling on campus, she writes, that this is big.

This is a rough read. In particular what gets me are the details of a prominent survivor invited to spill her guts at an institution with a deep sexual assault problem, greeted with boredom by male frat members. Horrifying.

The jackals are out, as they usually are for a woman who speaks up in a way that challenges patriarchy. (And a lot of why victims don't come forward or withdraw--as a Weinstein victim did--is because the misogynist public and legal system launch their own punitive assaults.)

It’s us. Men are the problem, and it’s men who have to do the work. (I mean, others *can*. But we are the ones who *should*.) Don’t rape! Don’t sexually assault! Don’t harass!

Stop telling women what to do. Stop telling us to do all of the work. Stop acting like you know more about our struggle than we do. Stand up for your fellow human being without any reward because that’s what we’re supposed to do. Ffs.

Updated information shows PPB killed the man and the dog. Absolutely shameful how some media talked about this man’s life like it was an afterthought, and unquestioningly put out copaganda.

That's because you (and I), unlike Kai, have had to actually hire people to do real jobs and aren't in the business of making up unspoken tests to disqualify otherwise perfectly suitable candidates. Kai has lived his entire professional life being a bullshitter on the air so the stakes are lower.

Research units from across government have been gutted. More than 10,000 PhDs have left government. For example the research arm of the Department of Education lost 90% of their staff and the research office for the Secretary of Health and Human Services lost an estimated 60% of their staff.

Finally, we come to people. This one is just depressing. Has AI made anything easier about the people management/people skills era? If it has, it has been swamped by all of the new interpersonal challenges we’re hitting thanks to AI.

To start, there’s the increased expectations. Many companies think that that increased visibility and waves hands AI productivity means managers can start to manage far larger teams, with no help coming as we reduce managers and don’t hire new ones. And of course, some companies are also expecting managers to write code because that is apparently the only individual contribution that matters (the idea that managers don’t make valuable individual contributions to companies is so mind-boggling I could write a whole additional piece on it). And while you’re doing this, you have to manage the AI transition: make sure your team is using AI enough, not too much, and soothe their anxiety, and deal with their impatience, and you too have to use it but no one is bothering to teach you how to use it well or soothe your anxiety, you are just expected to figure it the f* out.

So is it any wonder 1 in 3 managers are considering going back to individual contribution roles? Hell, if you’re going to ask me to write code and manage a huge team of people, I might just prefer to say, thanks, writing code is enough for me so I’ll go back to doing that.

This might be shocking to some, but the police calling for the removal of an elected council member for criticizing them is not how democracy works. The police who live in the city have a chance to vote, just like everyone else. Just thought I'd clear that up.
