The trouble is that we have a bad habit, encouraged by pedants and sophisticates, of considering happiness as something rather stupid. Only pain is intellectual, only evil interesting.

Pen, watercolor, black & white charcoal pencil.

Another featured piece from the Spooky Pants book.

A man in a sweater stands with his hands on his hips looking out of a large window with the curtains open. Things aren’t looking good outside, reader. A massive winged demon is emerging from the clouds as dozens of little ghosts and bone demons rip through the sky. On the ground below we see townsfolk running through the grass. Our man in the window is in no mood for this. He lets us know, “Oh, I am in no mood for this.” His dog looks out the window as well, wagging its tail.

Fantasia (1940) inspired drawing. I think I could’ve gone a little heavier with the chaos outside but we’ll try again with fresh drawings this October. I like how the clouds turned out. Trying to balance my sloppy lines with more detail can be tricky but I think we achieved a good result.

Young Girl Seated (1894) depicts a pause, not a pose. Here, we see Klimt’s growing interest in private, psychological moments. The soft focus and relaxed posture mark a departure from formal portraiture, hinting at an early search for deeper human truths.

Passage

Victoria Chang

Every leaf that falls
never stops falling. I once
thought that leaves were leaves.
Now I think they are feeling,
in search of a place—
someone's hair, a park bench, a
finger. Isn't that
like us, going from place to
place, looking to be alive?

An ache of pine Carolyn Forché #poetry #smallpoemsunday @tomsnarsky.bsky.social
WHAT COMES
to speak is not yet to have spoken
the not-yet of a white realm of nothing left neither for itself nor another
a no-longer already there, along with the arrival of what has been
light and the reverse of light
terror as walking blind along the breaking sea, body in whom I lived
the not-yet of death darkening what it briefly illuminates
an unknown place as between languages
back and forth, breath to breath as a calm
in the surround rises, fireflies in lindens, an ache of pine
you have yourself within you
yourself, you have her, and there is nothing that cannot be seen
open then to the coming of what comes

From her collection, In the Lateness of the World, and reprinted in Otherwhere, New & Selected Poems, 1976-2026, Scribner

Sep 9th - "Tomorrow's already the tenth". The Dude finds out about his landlord's dance quintet. He later visits the other Jeffrey Lebowski, the millionaire, who tells The Dude that Bunny Lebowski had been kidnapped. 📽️📅 The Big Lebowski (1998)
3 Screenshots from the movie "The Big Lebowski" (1998): First, a man in a blue athletic shirt stands on an outdoor stairway with sneakers scattered beside him, captioned "Dude, tomorrow's already the tenth." Second, Jeff Bridges as The Dude, wearing a robe and sneakers, sprawls dramatically on a rug inside a cluttered living room, with the subtitle "Well, we would very much like to see you. Thank you. It's Brandt." Third, a ransom-style note made of cut-out letters is held by hand, reading phrases like "We have bunny," "gather one million," "Funny stuff."

OP suggests critical theory is only criticizing in sense of coming after the fact/stuff/criticizee...but if it is coming before, critically forecasting different stuff and possibilities, the reader could be neither criticizer nor criticized but part of the new to come (hope that helps the torment)

Overgrowth
Irk Irwell

The grass has grown too high.
The weeds have breached the borders.

I stand there, unshaved,
watching it from the window, feeling a strange, quiet solidarity
with the garden's refusal to be managed any longer.

Perhaps there is peace
in simply letting the wildness take over, allowing the neat borders to finally collapse and letting the overgrowth bury the heavy stones.

This is the oldest* surviving Snakes & Ladders board in the world. Specifically, it's Gyan Chaupar, the Game of Knowledge. It's from the late 18th Century, but the game is much older - paper & cloth are not resilient media. The ladders represent virtue, the snakes vice. The scorpions are decorative.
