I followed the crickets' song and found my youth in the middle of an abandoned field off county road 9. It was right where I'd left it— under the old oak tree, next to the old book. I picked it up, dusted it off and skipped back to the car.

#scape to the quiet of the #lake #GreatEgret #wadingBird #birds #wildlife #nature #photography #thelittlethings #ECK 🕊️💙
A white Great Egret is standing along the shoreline of a lake. Tall green grasses in the foreground and blue water reflecting wispy clouds.
Interesting information:
The Great Egret Feature long necks, long legs, and dagger-like bills. They stand motionless or slowly stalk in shallow fresh or saltwater, waiting to strike fish, frogs, and other small aquatic prey with a sudden jab.
A tall, stately white wader of quiet waters. Common, especially in the south, it may wander far to the north in late summer. Nearly wiped out in the United States in the late 1800s, when its plumes were sought for use in fashion, the Great Egret made a comeback after early conservationists put a stop to the slaughter and protected its colonies; as a result, this bird became the symbol of the National Audubon Society.

17 Feb 2024. A visit to Ocean Beach in Kāwhia. It’s just after 8pm, and the sunset is stunningly uproarious as it paints the sky with buckets of colour. The black sand beach is a deep umber, and proof of earlier various recreational vehicles can be found in rows of tracks left behind. The Tasman is a deep blue. The wispy clouds are fantastic in their tones – peach, dark grey, off-white. The sun itself is half-sunk into a liquid horizon of dreams, and a mini reflection of orange can be seen in the shallows near the shore. From the larger orb, two arms reach and diagonally divide the frame from lower left to upper right. The smaller sphere tries to follow suit, managing one outstretched arm in solidarity. In the distance of the harbour on the left are rolling hills, dark and full of secrets.

3 Feb 2018. Lake Taharoa | Kai Iwi Lakes Reserve. This was our first time visiting Kai Iwi Lakes. I recall us both being gobsmacked by this crystal-clear freshwater dune lake. ✨Being here was magical.✨

For me, a big part of the magic was/is my husband (I dislike using tenses…) He’s standing barefoot in the shallows of the lake, just ankle deep. A tall, powerfully built bald man, he’s faced away from my phone’s camera and is wearing his white linen shirt and tan cargo shorts. His posture is relaxed, hands in each short pocket. In the distance, the lake’s waters deepen and more turquoise and deeper blues can be see in the distance. A few boats drift about as fellow visitors enjoy the glorious sunshiny day. The sky is blue as, and some clouds float by, all puffy and lightly stacked. Surrounding the lake edges are native grasses, darker brown and orange. A rim of thick trees line the horizon.

Inspired by #vssdaily prompt (location), I recalled a haiku* I’d previously penned:

𝑠𝑒𝑒𝑘 𝑚𝑒 𝑠𝑒𝑒𝑘𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑦𝑜𝑢
𝑒𝑐ℎ𝑜𝑙𝑜𝑐𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛
ℎ𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑡𝑠 𝑝𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑖𝑛 𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒

You tell me a spell to get the ghosts
off my back. It works for a while.

Every laundromat in town is hidden

Mid-Aug 2026. A picture of a Polygala Petite Butterfly shrub with their striking and wonderfully whimsical blooms. Whilst out on walkies, I wandered a way I'd not been in a while. Winding my way through the local neighbourhoods, this beauty caught my eye and my heart. It’s a low-maintenance evergreen shrub that blooms nearly all year and is pretty tolerant to the differing weather conditions here in NZ. The flowers are a vibrant magenta-purple shaped much like pea blossoms. The fluffy, brushy white tufts are the crests of the keel flower. These keels make a great landing surface for pollinators. Everybody jazz hands, now! The background is softened behind the larger group of flowers in the front centre of the photo. The leaves are a gentle sage green. Other flowers in various stages of bloom are scattered throughout the background as well.

I wasn’t necessarily feeling down on this walk but dangit if these sweeties didn’t give me a boost!

Per Alan @alan678.bsky.social, today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is #ODG, any Owl, Duck or Goose. No alt. #ScreechOwl #Birds #wildlife #photography #Florida #Backyard #nature #outdoors #thelittlethings #ECK 🦉
An eastern screech owl is perched on an oak branch with his back to us and his head turned to the side.
Eastern screech-owls are a smaller species of owl in Florida and are approximately the size of a robin.
This species has three distinctive color morphs, a rust-red, a slate-gray, and occasionally a brown color as an intermediate. They have a set of tufted feathers on top of their head that resemble ears or horns.
Screech-owls live primarily in tree-dominated habitats such as deciduous and coniferous forests, suburban parks and wooded yards. However, they are limited by the availability of nest cavities, as they do not build or modify their own.

Screech-owls have a broad diet consisting of insects, earthworms, crayfish, small amphibians, reptiles, and mammals. They're very skilled at capturing moths, bats, and songbirds. They primarily rely on their vision to hunt, waiting on a perch for prey to walk, crawl, or fly by. These small owls do not "hoot" , but they do call with eerie whinnies and trills.
Screech-owls nest in tree cavities, nest boxes, and sometimes even in the soffits of neglected buildings. Male eastern screech-owls defend a territory with multiple nest cavities. They are usually monogamous, but males will occasionally pair up with a second female during the breeding season.
Eggs hatch after about 26-34 days, and owlets are ready to fly in another 26-30 days. Screech-owls have been known to carry live blind-snakes to their nest, a snake species that eats insects infesting the nest while leaving the eggs and chicks alone.

May 2024. A visit to the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki to view an exhibition by Chinese designer Guo Pei’s stunning garment collection (think Rihanna at the 2015 Met Gala; to see that gown in person was supa cool). Entitled “Guo Pei: Fashion, Art, Fantasy”, we ooh’d and ahhh’d over about 60 pieces from this visionary haute courtier’s collection.

This golden beauty is “Legend of the Dragon”. Lavishly sequinned, there are dragon appliqués on each shoulder. A few displays such as this one were presented in simple nooks or smaller open areas of black background and soft overhead lighting which allowed the talent and handiwork to shine.
