Fairy comes from the Old French faie, which referred to a woman powerful in magic, word, or craft. This evolved to Fairy, Fey, etc. over time. Beings we call fey have other names: for example in Gaelic they are aos si, among other terms. #MythologyMonday 🖼: B. Froud
A somewhat low resolution image of Brian Froud's fairies on procession, showing weird little dudes wearing pinecones on their head or leaves on their face surrounding a bright green-blue fairy queen in a toga walking through the woods, attended by other fairy women.

#WyrdWednesday Eleanor Cobham was wife to the heir to Henry IV. Accused of consulting necromancers so as to predict the King's death, she was made to do penance & divorced from her husband. A story goes that a black dog which haunts Leeds Castle is a spirit raised by Eleanor during her imprisonment

In the Middle Ages, many people believed that classical poets and philosophers had been so wise that they must have mastered magic. Dante's "Inferno" has Virgil's spirit casting spells while Welsh sorcerers such as Ceridwen consulted the books of Virgil and Aristotle. 🎨Gustave Doré #WyrdWednesday

Necromancy is today the dark art of raising the dead, and while that has always been true, prior to the Enlightenment necromancy was a specific type of raising: raising spirits or the bodies they were bound to in order to speak with the dead. #WyrdWednesday 🖼: S. Rosa
Salvator Rosa's depiction of the Witch of Endor summoning Samuel's spirit; Saul and his sons cower on the floor, while the old woman, strangely nude except for her half-worn wind-swept toga, rubs some herbs while Samuel looks judgmentally at Saul. Demons surround her in the wind, looking like animal skulls and birds.

A page from WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN AUTUMN A ladybird Nature Book (1960) with illustrations by C. F. TUNNICLIFFE, R.A. Alt text by E. L. GRANT WATSON
This birch tree trunk, which looks so large and strong, is quite dead. It has been killed by the fungi. that have sucked out its strength and gradually weakened it, and by the grubs of beetles, leopard moths and other insects that have been eating away at its heart.
The large cusps of the razor-strop fungus have drawn out most of the tree's substance.
The greater-spotted woodpecker knows, both by instinct and experience, that fat and succulent grubs are likely to be found behind the bark, and that the inner wood will have been made pulpy by the fungi. Woodpeckers will often peck very large holes in dead trees, so large indeed that the stem will finally break off and fall.
The little brown tree-creeper is hunting in the lichens and mosses-and in the bark cracks-for small insects, wood-lice and spiders, but these are too small to be of much interest to the greater-spotted woodpecker.
The yew tree on the left has a crop of fine red berries.
Under the birch trees at the lake side, many of the golden leaves have fallen, and from among them a group of fly-agaric toadstools have pushed up their beautiful scarlet umbrellas. These toadstools, like several othe kinds, have a strong smell that is unpleasant to human beings but attractive to flies.

If a relative is taken by the fairies and a changeling left in their stead, you have one chance to get them back in some lore: you must go to where the fey are known to congregate on the next full moon and there negotiate with the joyful taken. #MythologyMonday 🖼️: E. Hughes
