The entire Obama era was exclusively doomsday prepper TV shows. It was the only type of programming. And we lapped it up. Now during the actual human engineered apocalypse we only get state sponsored programming about how doing DoorDash at 84 years old is a good substitute for universal healthcare.

Correction. Orwell never said this. He did however, warn that: "political language... is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind.” (That's Politics and the English Language, one of my favorite essays)

The USA, where the summary execution of an unarmed man can now be justified by the actual president, because on a separate occasion he kicked the tail light of a "very expensive government vehicle."
Agitator and, perhaps, insurrectionist, Alex
Pretti's stock has gone way down with the
just released video of him screaming and
spitting in the face of a very calm and under
control ICE Officer, and then crazily kicking
in a new and very expensive government
vehicle, so hard and violent, in fact, that the
taillight broke off in pieces. It was quite a
display of abuse and anger, for all to see,
crazed and out of control. The ICE Officer
was calm and cool, not an easy thing to be
under those circumstances! MAKE AMERICA
GREAT AGAIN

This is the CDC map for homicide rates by state for the most recent year on their website. Gov. Landry, who leads one of the states in the nation with the highest murder rate, is on television chiding Minnesota, one of the states with the lowest murder rates.

Compare & contrast. This is Trump’s demand for Greenland. And this is Hitler’s for the Sudetenland. There is no difference. The language. The unstoppable need to dominate. The megalomania. It’s the same. And Keir Starmer’s response is appeasement. We are in that moment. 1/

A Republican elected official proudly declaring he has no problem with agents of the state shooting unarmed citizens in the face if they annoy the regime. It is impossible to make democracy work with a party that not only tolerates people like this, but elevates them to positions of influence.

The Trump administration has reacted to a small scale lone wolf attack by in DC announcing a sweeping collective punishment, using the organs of government to heap blame on partisan rivals, and potentially dissuading anyone from collaborating with US forces abroad for a generation.

To check if a pundit is being honest, ask “would he have made this claim a year ago, before he knew it would be a defense of Trump” and folks, I’m 100% certain Douthat would not have argued “The president needs to demolish the East Wing and build a palace” last year
