When I originally posted this I thought it looked familiar even though I've never been to Hardwick Hall, and I've just realised it's because I saw another painting in the Tate a few years ago (unknown artist) of a lady, thought to be Mary Clerke, wearing a petticoat decorated with sea monsters.
Painting of an Elizabethan lady, with a painted petticoat just visible in the gap in the front.Close up of the painted petticoat, which is just visible and shows a castle in the background, and in the sea in front are three sea monsters.

A good fresh Star Trek take on those fake isekai title jokes
A tumblr screenshot showing a post and two reblog responses, reading:
1. "star trek would be the ideal fictional universe to get trapped in because you'd explain your situation and they'd be like yeah makes sense. no further questions. fortunately we can use the mysterious warp signature emitting from this system's icy moon to counterface with the solar radiation and slingshot you back home"
2. "I'm from a universe where your world is all a work of fiction." Benjamin Sisko, nodding. "That happened to me once."

not the main problem with today's book landscape, but do you think we could find a way to bring back long-running fantasy series whose authors have not even begun to think about the possibility of resolving their psychosexual issues so their books end up reshaping queer teens' minds permanently

A collection of frogs for you in these trying times.
Five digital drawings of "frogs". One is inspired by an Ouroboros, another seems to have a carved turnip for a head, one is a somewhat scrungly witch, another wears a flowery shirt while drinking from a coconut, and finally one of them is "Bimble". Bimble looks like if a rock tried very hard to be a frog and almost succeeded.

As I watched the movie, I couldn’t help but dwell on the gross hypocrisy of the show To Catch a Predator itself which I of course watched with the same enthrallment as everyone else. At a time when children, including myself, were ruthlessly made into sexual objects, the pedophile acted as a kind of tulpa or totem for what was, in reality, a societal sin. I was fourteen when the movie’s central travesty happened, when the district attorney shot himself. Where I went to school, if you didn’t dress revealingly (tight t-shirt, low-rise jeans, push up bra) you were relentlessly bullied for being a dyke. If you did dress that way you -- a thirteen year old girl -- were called a slut instead.

If you were fat, you were a pariah, fair game for ritual humiliation. If you were 80 lbs you were fat. Everyone suspected everyone else of being “a fag.” When you went to the nurses’ office at lunch to take your pills everyone called you retarded because someone found out you had ADHD. Your peers worked overtime to find some way to humiliate you, some way to make a spectacle out of you and of themselves at the same moment. Everyone behaved as though they were on TV, because TV was just as juvenile as real life. Girls went on MTV to have their bodies rated. They went on contrived and embarrassing dating shows. This was a time when peers and adults alike would talk about how your tits were too big for your age and about how they couldn't wait for you to turn 18.

Pen and watercolor

A pack of witches dance around a fire circle summoning a massive demon in the flames. One of our witches is down though, reader. She lets her sisters know that she won’t be continuing the circle. “Gotta sit this one out, sisters,” she says. “Rolled my ankle.”

I played around with adding a lot of detail to this scene (more shadows, trees in the background, etc.) I think the simpler version works but I’m not sure how I feel about the fire demon drawing. I think I like it. Was having trouble getting the composition of the scene set up with a text bubble in the bottom right. I do like the purple against the black dresses and little boots.

Fan art for Over the Garden Wall. The illustration shows a cart with pumpkins being ridden by a black cat and a pumpkin man with a pitchfork walking next to the cart. The cart is being pulled by two turkeys, and behind them is a pumpkin woman and a pumpkin headed skeleton holding hands. There is a candy scattered on the ground and a small duck and frog are walking with the procession. The background is of a bucolic scene with rolling fields with early morning mist

These fragments from a Roman villa in Spain are not from a mosaic but from a fresco. If you look closely you’ll see a grid of lines, many following the contour of the figures, much as tesserae do on mosaics. This trompe-l’oeil technique simulates mosaics. 1/ 🏺 1st-2nd c. Museo de Málaga 📸 me
Fragment of a fresco depicting part of a human face, mostly the eyes. Thin lines form a grid pattern, simulating the edges of tesserae.Fresco fragment showing a naked torso of a woman, her legs and pubic area covered in a red himation (cloak). Her right hand carries a basket laden with fruit, which look like giant globes of grapes. Grapevine leaves appear in the background. A Dionysian scene. The faux tesserae grid lines follow the curves of the body.Fresco fragment depicting some sort of half-human creature with wild hair and bare torso, gesturing upwards with his right hand and holding a branched stick with his left. The faux tesserae grid lines follow the curves of his garment and body.Fresco fragment with the torso of perhaps a god with golden skin, a red himation flowing outwards and partially covering his or her legs. The Phantom of Heilbronn, also referred to as the Woman Without a Face, was a presumed female serial killer whose existence was inferred from DNA evidence found at 40 crime scenes across Austria, France and Germany from 1993 to 2009.

In March 2009, investigators concluded that the supposed serial killer did not exist, and the DNA belonged to a woman who worked at a factory that made the cotton swabs used for collecting DNA samples
