If you think an artist's style looks like AI but you can scroll back through their portfolio and see them doing the same work before 2020, congrats, you're not looking at an AI grifter. You're looking at one of the original victims whose entire style AI stole.

Right now, Nvidia is undertaking a round of stock buybacks. That means they had free cash just sitting around. All this time they could have been like "Yeah we'll use our AI profits to subsidize our retail goods and keep the public happy so they embrace the tech." They didn't. Remember that.

I think you can tell these people are unserious because it's never "acknowledge our machines are conscious so we can give them self-determination/rights/pay." There never seems to be a call to action other than "give us less oversight and more money"

Lately I've been thinking a lot about Terry Pratchett's "Reaper Man" and AI. He was so ahead of his time in so many ways - or maybe squarely in his time but so many missed the very obvious signposts of where we were heading. Gonna be spoilers in this thread for a 25-year old book.

This is very much my thinking on generative AI. Right now, it’s a complete nonstarter—built and maintained through unethical means and environmentally calamitous—but somehow remove those issues, and it seems like a thing that still largely takes value away from the world and that I don’t want.

Discworld QOTD, from Mort
The only thing known to go faster than ordinary light is monarchy, according to the philosopher Ly Tin Wheedle. He reasoned like this: you can't have more than one king, and tradition demands that there is no gap between kings, so when a king dies the succession must therefore pass to the heir instantaneously. Presumably, he said, there must be some elementary particles -- kingons, or possibly queons -- that do this job, but of course succession sometimes fails if, in mid-flight, they strike an anti-particle, or republicon. His ambitious plans to use his discovery to send messages, involving the careful torturing of a small king in order to modulate the signal, were never fully expanded because, at that point, the bar closed.
