i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

Trial of live facial recognition in London stations ends with a false positive and no arrests
Freedom of information request finds six-month trial cost £320,000, used almost 100 police hours and led to just one – incorrect – alert A six-month trial of live facial recognition (LFR) technology in London’s railway stations that cost more than £320,000 and almost 100 hours of police officers’ time ended in one false match against a watchlist of suspects and no arrests. More than half a million faces were scanned between February and July this year in some of the capital’s busiest transport hubs during the British Transport Police (BTP) trial of the surveillance technology, which aimed to help catch offenders and people breaching court orders. I don’t understand this “very British/very English” framing. According to the Today programme it was “very English” that a member of the public called the police on seeing something dodgy. I’d no idea this is a specifically English thing. Perhaps we can encourage other countries to adopt this idea?

I want to come back to this to say: this is not a linguistic complaint, it's just a class thing again. The idea is that respectable educated people always write in formal "correct" written English style, and if you don't it's because you're too uneducated/stupid/lazy to manage it
Jack Tindale - Minor point but I really hate this performative “y’all” people do to try and appear more folksy. I don’t type in a Yorkshire accent and I did people would rightly tell me to shut up.

Burnham, as expected, fuelling far-right narratives instead of addressing them He knows painting these as "legitimate concerns" will only embolden and legitimise them He knows they are minoritarian but he makes them "the people" He's comfortable for the rest of us can suffer the consequences
Burnham says concerns of women in Piddington about camp for asylum seekers 'understandable'

Q: What would you say to the women of Piddington concerned about having a camp for asylum seeker near their village, or women in other villages with similar concerns?

Burnham replied:

Those concerns are understandable and they have to be addressed in whatever solution is finally agreed.

There were also concerns expressed about the use of hotels and the reason why the nature of accommodation is changing across the country is because a commitment was given to end the use of hotels, and that was what many people were calling for a few years ago.
Burnham says he will be 'relentless' in dealing with small boats, but sidesteps offshore processing question

Q: Would you consider more radical policies, such as sending asylum seekers to a country like Albania to have their claims processed there?

Burnham avoided the question, but stressed there was some evidence that “things are going in the right direction.”

He said he would be “relentless” in addressing this issue.

And he praised what Shabama Mahmood, the home secretary, is doing on this.

She’s got a strong grip on this issue. What we have been doing is working, but more is needed and more will be done.
