“In almost any other area, those numbers would have this treated as a health emergency, but the stigma and misunderstanding around ADHD means instead we’re treated as an inconvenience and proposed to be ‘disappeared’, untreated, from the waiting lists

Well, this was inevitable. Forstater is now using her own case to argue that racism should/is protected as a philosophical belief 🤮
"Even comments which are “serious, severely hurtful and
prejudicial”are covered by Article 10 of the European Convention on Human rights (freedom of expression) which doesn't mean absolute freedom of expression in a situations, but employers should treat beliefs equally.

As the judge said in my case even beliefs that are profoundly distressing and offensive to many others are beliefs that must be tolerated in a pluralist society.""Cofnas's hereditarian belief has already been found to be "worthy of respect in a democratic society" by a court in the UK.

Though not binding in Belgium, but its anti-discrimination law is based on the same principle.

Still it's better to have a good job than a good legal case.

Ghent uni could string out the suspension - the process is the punishment.

If there are calls for a staff member to be discriminated against because of their beliefs the answer should be No (unless the belief falls below the v low threshold for belief discrimination), not "oh well if 2000 people object..."

We found that only 2% of AI-generated stories about animals featured female characters. They talked to my colleague Michelle Martin and Kate Sellers from Seattle Public Library to contextualize these findings. “If you don’t see [yourself] in what you read, you get the idea that you don’t count.”
Screenshot from article that reads: "Russell Samora, 38, of western Massachusetts was reading a children’s book with his daughter when the thought crossed his mind: Why are the bears always boys?

He remembered thinking, “Wait a minute, there’s a bear and a rabbit in the story, but there’s absolutely no reason for the bear to be referred to as a boy.”

That’s when Samora started noticing a trend. Most of the animals in the books he read to his daughter were male.

“It was something I couldn’t unsee,” he said.

He became curious why animal characters are usually boys. A data journalist himself, Samora teamed up with experts, including Melanie Walsh, an assistant professor of informatics at the University of Washington, to determine which genders were assigned most often to animal characters in children’s books.

Now, Walsh and doctoral students Imani Finkley and Yuanxi Li have taken those questions one step further by exploring what happens when artificial intelligence gets involved."Screenshot from articles that reads: "Researchers also surveyed 1,300 people to see how their biases would stack up against the books. They asked respondents to finish this sentence: “And then the bear said, ‘I must go to the river.’ Upon arriving….”

While the bear was randomly swapped for bird, cat, pig, duck, mouse or dog, the survey results revealed distinct gender biases. Respondents favored male pronouns for all six animals.

These results were published in The Pudding last year.

As AI-generated children’s books hit the market, Walsh said her team’s study, which builds upon earlier findings, can guide future research on AI and gender bias.

“Undeniably, AI is already being used in children’s storytelling,” she said.

Books with AI-generated content have flooded the self-publishing market on platforms like Amazon. Features like Gemini’s Storybook also allow users to generate children’s stories for AI to read aloud."Screenshot from article that reads: "Yeah, we can use this model to generate a story about a talking bear for my child, but how is this bear being represented?" said Finkley, one of the doctoral students who worked on the study.

Michelle Martin, the Beverly Cleary professor for children and youth services at the UW Information School, said she's not surprised by the study's findings, since AI algorithms learn from existing content that reflects human bias.

But she also said representation is especially important in books designed for kids.

"It's important for children to see representation of their experiences," she said. "If you don't see it in what you read, you get the idea that you don't count."

Libraries have also jumped in on the AI conversation. The Seattle Public Library has committed to not purchasing materials that include AI-generated content, said Kate Sellers, managing librarian for technical and collection services, in a statement.

However, she also said it can be difficult to tell when AI has been used.

"These materials in digital format are not always properly labeled or identified by OverDrive, our main e-book and e-audiobook vendor, so it is possible some will appear in the collection in the Libby app, but we do our best to monitor the situation and avoid AI-generated materials when selecting new materials for the Library's collection," she said.Screenshot from article with plot that shows all six models plus human survey baseline and model average, broken down by how the animal characters in stories were gendered. Feminine only ever reaches 3% for any of the models, but reaches about 13% for human survey. Otherwise mostly dominated by neutral and masculine.

The EHRC Code of Practice comes into force this week. This is an attack on trans+ people. It is guidance, not law. It does not remove rights or make harassment legal. UCU stands in solidarity with the trans+ community. Join the lobby for trans equality, 9 September with Trans+ Solidarity Alliance
The EHRC guidance and Code of Practice comes into force this week. This is an attack on trans+ people.
These changes will make trans+ people's lives harder.
They will not make women safer. As a result of this we are likely to see greater exclusion from everyday spaces, increased scrutiny and harassment, and institutions rushing through damaging policy changes.
Let's be clear, it does not:
• Permit harassment or discrimination.
• Remove anyone's legal protections.
• Justify rushed, intrusive policy changes. What you can do:
• Look out for each other, solidarity is practical, not just a post.
• Report harassment, it is still illegal and your union will back you.
• Push your institution to protect every student and member of staff.
• Join us in Parliment for a mass rally on SeptemberViolence against women is real, and it is serious. It is also being used to justify this attack on trans people.
This guidance will not prevent it.
The dangers women face do not come from trans people sharing a bathroom.
UCU sends solidarity to the trans+ community. We will keep fighting for trans+ inclusion, and against the misuse of the EHRC Code of Practice.

Conclusions:
Conclusion
Access to books is not a luxury but a fundamental driver of educational success. For many children, schools are the first and only place they encounter a wide range of books and stories. School libraries are not optional enhancements but essential infrastructure—powerful equalisers that ensure every child, regardless of background, can engage with reading and realise their potential. School libraries must form a central pillar of the National Reading Guarantee which we are recommending.
REC
Evidence the Committee has seen points to a sharp drop off in reading for pleasure amongst teenagers, but the Department is focusing its efforts on school libraries in primary schools. The Department should extend its pledge to fund a library in every primary school to include every secondary school.
Recommendation
It is striking that libraries are statutory requirements in prisons, but not schools. Once funding for primary and secondary schools is in place, the Department must recognise school libraries as essential public services and place them on a statutory footing. As part of this, it should consult on the definition of a library and be open to including book corners in classrooms or other reading spaces, as well as dedicated rooms. As a first step, it must start collecting data on school libraries and the presence of dedicated library staff by adding this to the school census. This must be completed by the end of the next academic year.

Recommendation
The Department should introduce a school library development fund to enable schools to refresh their book stock and train staff to run their school library with maximum impact.

We know that [boys] are visual and love social media, scrolling, all of that stuff [ … ] One of them was so engaged that he printed his own book and was sharing across the school, and it was like “Miss, have you seen this year 8 boy’s book?”. They are all so excited because it is about them and it has the drawings, little stick men. They love it [ … ] It is important to push them on to all the picture books and graphic novels, speaking to the publishers about that, but also the teachers and librarians to focus on getting more of that for the boys
