Early for #MosaicMonday, but a progress update on my edible Theodora mosaic (made out of fondant on wafer paper)! Think it is almost done ☺️
Photo of sheet of water paper with lots of differently colored pieces of fondant that I colored and cut tesserae out of, and made a mosaic of the empress Theodora with a gold background; I attached the tesserae with edible ‘food glue’

A very minor example of this: when I'm travelling by myself, I almost always have dinner close to where I'm staying so I'm not out by myself at night in an unfamiliar place for too long. When travelling with my (male) partner, we get to choose based on the restaurant, not the location.

Can I just gush about the amazing students in the course I'm teaching right now? They're engaged. They're sharp. They critically engage with the material. They speak up and they listen to each other. Their attitude is positive, kind and open. 10/10 would teach again.

I think this is a key part of why historians are mad, yeah. Because it’s a dunk, and it’s one that like. We all know that scientists and engineers think themselves better and smarter than humanities students. There’s always an assumption that they could do our job but we couldn’t do theirs.

In the time of enshittification of, well, everything the role of higher education is not to teach students how to enshittificate more efficiently. It is to provide them with hard skills like source criticism, languages, writing or critical reading that will allow them to survive all of this.

www.bbc.com/news/article... I do see why it would be a good idea to break the hold that social media have over children, but this idea that we should "put parents back in the driving seat" concerns me. It assumes that parents are always safe and reliable - and unfortunately, that's just not true.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good book club read? It'll be my turn to pick soon and I have a ton of books I'm personally looking forward to, but I'm feeling a bit insecure. We have no specific requirements, but none of us are romance readers and we all enjoy 'deeper' themes.

A very important point! I don't like this line of thinking either (although I do think there's a good case for viewing artifacts in their historical context), and what I was attempting to do was highlighting a prevalent argument, while also showing that it is very unevenly applied.

Oof, I hate this. Mispronunciations are very common among those who learned new words by reading, so there's a good chance that all you're doing is bullying people whose mummy and daddy didn't regularly serve hors d"oeuvres before dinner, but who are delightful to chat to while eating them.
