Have you completed stress-awareness training? Did it address the causes of stress in your area — workload, staffing, insecure work or unreasonable demands?

Reminder: Workplace stress is not an individual resilience problem. Stress-management training alone does not improve wellbeing; improvements come from changing working conditions. The University must address stress at source.

BUCU members heard affected staff in modern languages were told in June they were at risk of redundancy. A very brief consultation followed; staff alternatives were rejected. Redundancies were approved by Council via email over summer. Colleagues offered to teach out the MA; proposals rejected.

📢 UoB staff: your unions need to hear from you. UCU & UNISON have launched an anonymous survey on "Future Shape" and the restructure to a 3-Faculty model — how it's led, what it means for your job/School, and how (or whether) you're being consulted.
docs.google.com
Joint union survey - UoB "Future Shape" and impact of restructures - August 2026
The University Council has approved the move to a new three-Faculty structure. We are not asking you to reopen that decision. What has not yet been settled is how the change is delivered — who leads the new Faculties and how they are appointed, what it means for your School or team, your workload, your job, and how staff are consulted along the way. Those are the questions this survey asks, so that your unions go into consultation with clear, independent evidence of what staff actually want. We know that there have already been localised "restructure / Future Shape" announcements in various central professional services areas - such as External Relations, Student Services and Careers Network - as well as pockets of staff placed at risk of compulsory redundancy. The university is currently only engaging with campus unions where it is legally obligated (where there is a risk of compulsory redundancy) - whereas both UCU and UNISON believe they are obligated via our respective recognition agreements to consult with us where there are changes to job descriptions. This survey is run by your unions, not the University. It is completely anonymous. Responses are collected and analysed by your branch representatives on an independent platform — not on University systems, and not visible to management. We’ll publish a thematic summary to all staff and use the results to inform our negotiations with the University, our formal position on the failure to consult collectively on changes to job descriptions, and our ongoing engagement with the Health and Safety Executive on work-related stress. Who should respond: any member of staff, whether or not you are a union member. There is one optional question about union membership; it does not affect your anonymity. It takes about 10 minutes.

Universities across the UK are calling their redundancy programmes ‘voluntary’. In today’s Sunday Times a Senior Lecturer in Humanities completely exposes that lie.
“I didn’t want to leave, but anyone who stays in that job will be burnt out by November. It will be far worse for the students, because they are losing so many specialists in their fields, and it will leave no time for research.”

SundayTimes reports that the University of Birmingham spent £12.4m on redundancy payments in 2024–25. This was the fourth-highest among the eight Russell Group universities listed as spending more than £10m, and sixth-highest across all 117 institutions analysed.

Universities exist to teach students & produce research This brings in the money. Academics generate the value. Everyone else is paid from that income stream. University senior management has forgotten who creates the income & who depends on it They behave as if system runs the other way around

Redundancies don’t just affect those selected. Where posts are cut but work remains, other staff absorb extra duties, increasing workload and impacting wellbeing, teaching quality and student support
