I'll confess I really like talking about it but mainly because I'm fascinated with the psychosexuality of RWers and I'm still stuck on the whole "we needed a tsundere, something we apparently sorely lacked" thing

one of the ways the media shows which side they prefer, is which politicians they quote uncharitably out-of-context and which they clean up for even when what they actually say and do is offensive (the Biden story ran on the front page less than a week before the 24 election)

I've got a good idea for how the BBC should pick the live action show's next showrunner. Ask them how this show fits into canon. If they give any answer other than 'what on earth are you talking about?' 'who cares?' or 'grow up', they are immediately disqualified:

Before the interstate system made hour-plus-long daily commuting feasible, there was an intellectual tradition in the U.S. churning out James Talaricos (likable, responsible, not quite radical but close enough) and reliable voters to support them

The inclusion of Rawls on that list is interesting. I guess you might say he was culturally Christian if not believing during most of his career. But yeah, similar. The effect of War on these mid-Century guys is important.
Excerpt from Rawls's biography on Wikipedia.

Religious views

Raised a devout Episcopalian, at Princeton University while working toward an undergraduate he even considered attending a seminary to study for the Episcopal priesthood, but decided to enlist into the army during World War II. His military service would eventually motivate him to abandon his faith. In his personal 1997 essay, On My Religion, he explained that after the Holocaust and his experiences in World War II, he found it impossible to believe in a traditional, personal God who actively directs human history or answers prayers.

Would you believe it not only existed but the US mainline denominations spent decades flailing in their efforts to recover a fragment of the moral and cultural esteem their traditions enjoyed in the era when, e.g., Reinhold Niebuhr, Karl Barth, and Paul Tillich graced the covers of TIME Magazine?

“The Suburban Captivity of the Churches” is a fairly well-researched if tedious account of why this no longer exists like it used to. The short answer to the question of what happened is white flight capped the mission field and left mainline Christianity without much to do

Three of of those, at least, were notably devout Anglicans/Episcopalians or Presbyterians aka mainline prostestants. Not sure about Rawls, but he was definitely studied in seminary ethics classes. That’s a big part of Talarico’s identity. We have definitely faded from the prominence of mid-century.

maybe we just need to bring back vicars. But not like, for anglicans to feel good, just pay random graduates to go out and live in the countryside and work one day a week, and think the rest of the time. We'd maybe get some interesting philosophy out of it.

You know one thing Yuzi pointed out to me was pretty ambiguous: was he actually a postdoc? He didn't seem to have a PI, but also seemed to be on soft-money, but also seemed to explicitly identify as a postdoc, but also seemed to be up for a permanent(?) position of some kind? It was very strange.
