It may paradoxically be easier to claw back well-known findings, since they’re the ones people like to talk about.

But an increasing proportion of arrests have been made by local law enforcement in partnership with ICE, via 287(g) agreements. In many regions, it can be difficult to know when local officers are conducting routine policework or immigration enforcement. In many cases, they are doing both.
A chart showing immigration arrests by local police, which have increased steadily since ICE's new enforcement strategy began in April 2026, reaching its highest amount above 200 arrests per day in late June 2026.

ICE is now lying in wait outside convenience stores, or at busy intersections. Agents are arresting people at international airports. Local police and sheriffs, deputized by the federal government, are detaining immigrants during traffic stops. ICE is now detaining more immigrants than ever before.
A chart that shows a timeline of ICE immigration enforcement against different significant events (Los Angeles raids, Minneapolis and Chicago raids), with a line in late March 2026 that says "New enforcement strategy begins" before a peak of over 1,500 daily arrests in July 2026.

FFF – Cailin O’Connor - Closing the Loop on Social Influence in Science
The Center for Philosophy of Science invites you to our Featured Former Fellow online lecture presented by: Featured Former Fellow: Cailin O’Connor Tuesday, September 22nd @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm EST Title: Closing the Loop on Social Influence in Science Abstract: The prevalence of social influence in science is widely documented. But this influence is not one-sided. Social beliefs and values shape science, and at the same time are shaped by scientific findings. This mutual influence raises the possibility of dynamical interplay between science and society. But while this possibility has been mentioned numerous times in the literature, there is relatively little work attempting to analyze and outline how this mutual influence might work. This talk argues that two-way influence between science and society is promiscuous, occurring via a wide range of mechanisms that start with both values and related cultural background beliefs, and influence both values and related cultural background beliefs. I’ll discuss three sorts of general patterns at play—positive feedback, polarizing feedback, and amplification. This talk will be available online only: Zoom: https://pitt.zoom.us/j/91092965122 YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrRp47ZMXD7NXO3a9Gyh2sg.

Let's make this book a bestseller: Rabbit Farming in the Middle Ages and Beyond: A Landscape History. David Gould. www.liverpooluniversitypress.co.uk/doi/book/10....
Since their introduction to the British Isles after the Norman Conquest, rabbits have successfully colonised the English landscape. Yet the species was not initially wild but was instead reared within manmade warrens for its meat and fur in a form of animal husbandry that was surprisingly widespread and long-lived.

Historical and archaeological approaches allow the spread of rabbits to be traced as more and more English locales hosted those warrens, the physical remains of which are still numerous across the country. This book provides a history and a comprehensive investigation of the types of structures associated with rabbit farming and details how warrens were managed, both on a day-to-day basis and in terms of how they were placed within the landscape.

In contrast to their eventual fate as food for the poor, rabbits were initially bred for the wealthy few and it follows that rabbits would have been viewed differently by past societies. Adopting a multi-disciplinary approach, this volume explores the species’ historic status and discusses associations with conspicuous displays of wealth, Christian symbolism, and female sexuality. It also investigates the extent to which rabbits were simply viewed as destructive pests or as providing opportunities for poaching.

Why are scientists so often industry dupes? Because they (kind of) want to be.
We often treat scientists as hapless, unwitting targets of industry influence. But the truth is far more complex. Scientists can gain tremendous career advantages by working with industry.
