90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)
You cannot conduct a fair match when one side is playing with a ball and the other with bombs and, if democracy is to survive, it must be conducted according to definite and recognised rule. One of them is that no political party should resort to any weapon other than reason and argument. The introduction of private armies, as I see it, strikes at the root of democracy. I know it is contended that the Blackshirts are not armed and, therefore, are not an army, but I do not think that argument can be upheld. … Uniformed men in military formation suggest, and are meant to suggest, the idea of force. It is no argument to reply that at this or that demonstration no force is intended. It is an inescapable fact that a uniform in politics symbolises force, to be used either now or in the future.

The Small-Area Global Elections (SAGE)
Dataset
Noah Dasanaike*
June 30, 2026
Conditionally Accepted at Nature Scientific Data
Abstract
Cross-national research on electoral behavior has been bounded by the granularity of comparative election data. Existing archives aggregate to constituency or country level, omit spatial information, or restrict coverage to a small set of well-documented democracies. The Small-Area Global Elections (SAGE) dataset collects lower-house parliamentary and presidential returns for 110 countries and territories at the smallest unit each electoral authority publishes, geocodes the units, and harmonizes party and candidate identifiers across languages. For most countries the unit is a polling station with fewer than a thousand voters; the full dataset carries roughly ten billion votes cast across more than eight million units. The dataset is openly available in tabular and spatial formats, with companion R and Python packages providing direct access. SAGE supports spatial analyses of electoral behavior across democracies and hybrid regimes at a granularity not previously available for cross-national comparison.Map

The world has become much more resilient to disaster events over the last century. In the chart here, you can see estimates of average death rates — measured as the number of deaths per 100,000 people — by decade since the early 20th century.
Stacked bar chart of global annual death rates from natural disasters (decadal averages of deaths per 100,000 people) where the 1920s and 1940s show major peaks largely driven by droughts and floods and rates are much lower from about 1960 onward. In 1966, abortion was suddenly restricted for most women in Romania. In the decades that followed, maternal mortality increased, and by the 1980s, more than 80% of maternal deaths happened as a result of abortion complications.
Maternal mortality rates in Romania climbed following tight restrictions on abortion

Line chart of estimated maternal mortality (deaths per 100,000 live births) from 1965 to 2010, with two labeled series: "Total maternal mortality" and "Maternal mortality from abortions." A vertical marker near the late 1960s indicates "Abortion restricted" and another at 1990 marks "Abortion relegalized." Both series rise after restrictions, with abortion-related deaths forming the bulk of total by the 1980s (annotation: more than 80 percent of maternal deaths were caused by unsafe abortions). Both series peak in the late 1980s — total roughly 160 to 170 per 100,000 and abortion-related roughly 140 to 150 — then drop sharply immediately after relegalization and continue declining through the 1990s and 2000s to low levels around 20 to 30 per 100,000 by 2010. Note: maternal deaths include deaths during pregnancy (including abortion), childbirth, and in the 42 days afterward.
