In the last year a number of people either told me about Tacitus or strongly implied I should read Tacitus (including a ‘ref #2’ on a paper I subsequently abandoned).

This is partially bragging; but really, I love that i can write a pretty random essay on plato/aristotle and agathon that ran away from me; and then get all kinds of engaged responses by professional philosophers who clearly also have spent time reflecting on and being baffled by the symposium.

When confronted with the reality of a Soviet Doomsday Machine, Dr. Strangelove asks "Why keep it secret?" I often think of that scene: why(absent MAD) build a machine that generates existential risk if you sincerely believe you cannot actually control the machine ?

I’ve read enough of recent articles that I don’t doubt that this is true. But it is true only of philosophy in some traditions, at some phases of those traditions’ development.

It's a bit baffling that corporations that put tools on the market that without the corporation noticing it at first break into lots of other organization websites (doing god knows what) are not facing existential legal liability risk.

I have a lot of nitpicking criticisms on the details (not the least on tje hume chapter and the odd status of adam smith in her argument), but I really admire the overall arc of the argument of this book not the least its ambition.

At some point advancement of knowledge and journal publication will just diverge, and people will wonder why journal publication became the route to academic jobs and assume the publishers must have orchestrated it back in the day.
