Here is a map of the magnitude of non-stationarity in 100-year storm. How much wetter have 100-year storms been getting. And a distribution of how what is now a 100-year storm under Atlas 14 would be reclassified under Atlas 15 (for present day, and 1.5C). 2/

More importantly, those defenses that you built at the 100-year design standard based on NOAA Atlas 14? If you look at the map, east of the 100 meridian that design standard is probably about 20% too low for what Atlas 15 will say is a 100-year storm TODAY. 5/5

From this same program in Vienna: some locations with particularly many illegal parking incidents that block a bus or tram lane are being turned into microparks! (with the street parking removed entirely) now there’s an idea @mayor.nyc.gov (translation in alt text)
A screenshot from the Vienna transit agency website, saying (roughly translated):
“From illegal parking hotspots to livable green spaces for all

Check out our picture gallery of what it looks like when we remove illegal parking hotspots, with an example at Kreuzgasse in the 18th district. Where cars used to block the tram, now flowers and blooming and trees are providing shade. Removing illegal parking hotspots benefits not only public transit riders, but also has a lot of benefits for neighbors. You can also see that in the Camillo-Sitte-Gasse in the 15th district: where cars used to illegally park or got stuck in traffic, now there are green spaces. We opened up the asphalt and replaced it with bushes and greens. Wider sidewalks, a water fountain, and four benches help increase the niceness of the space. This is how we turn asphalt and traffic into livable green spaces.”

Black text on white page that reads:

Older adults are at greater risk for heat-related illness, especially during prolonged periods of extreme heat.

If you have an older loved one, friend, or neighbor, check in with them today. Make sure they're staying hydrated, spending time in air-conditioned spaces whenever possible, and know where to find the nearest cooling center.

During a heat wave, it's the little things that make a difference. Something as simple as adding frozen fruit to water can make it easier to stay hydrated throughout the day.

As part of our Heat Emergency Plan, NYC Health + Hospitals' COOL vans will be conducting wellness checks for older adults referred by NYC Department for the Aging to connect vulnerable New Yorkers with heat relief when needed.

Visit nyc.gov/beattheheat or call 311 to find a cooling center and learn how to stay safe in the heat.
