Chlorophyll concentration — the pigment found in phytoplankton — in the equatorial Pacific are lower during El Niño than during neutral conditions. Fewer phytoplankton mean less food for zooplankton, fish, seabirds & marine mammals. This can also mean lower catches for fishermen.
