Not all those who wander are lost. Climate variability and impacts by day, cities by evening, rock violin by night (sometimes all three at once).

🚨📈 New preprint! Every ton of CO2 matters. We show that near-term climate impacts are linear in cumulative CO2 emissions. Every ton emitted adds to damages and every ton not emitted avoids damages. w/ @lfreese.bsky.social, Marissa Childs, & @marshallburke.bsky.social eartharxiv.org/repository/v...

🚧 München–Salzburg: Massive Einschränkungen 2027 Vom 8. Februar bis 9. Juli wird die Strecke saniert. Statt stündlicher Fernzüge verkehren nur drei EC pro Tag und Richtung via Mühldorf. 🔸 Railjets München–Wien–Budapest fahren via Passau. 🔸 München–Graz: nur zwei EC-Zugpaare täglich, via Wörgl.

And yet 18th St. 1 has higher ridership than some entire urban rail lines in the rest of the country 😅

So many of you have asked about the archival image on the cover. The full watercolor will also be reproduced in the book. It depicts discussions about the plague between the Habsburgs and the Ottomans on the borders.

Was watching Buffy’s Anya backstory episode. Friend asked why I sighed. “She’s not of a sufficiently high social class to have domesticated rabbits that far north in Europe in that century, but the writers couldn’t know, the paper was only presented at a conference yesterday.” Accuracy is fleeting.

New paper in ES&T Letters: the first full-year look at what NYC congestion pricing did to air quality. Led by the brilliant Polina Goldberg, we combined 15 roadside PM2.5 monitors with TROPOMI NO2 to ask if air in the Congestion Relief Zone got cleaner, and did pollution just move next door?

watching the CMIP7 variables get uploaded like
photo of the back of a silver Camry with a vanity Arizona licence plate reading 'MRSOL'

(mrsol is the variable name of root zone soil moisture, which is still missing from many CMIP6 runs)

(Also, of all the NYC transit I take, the M60 seems to have the absolute worst ratio of [people who see a pregnant person standing precariously] to [people offering a seat], even - contrary to the stereotype - once you’re in queens)

Kevin Schwarzwald @kschwarzwald.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
For years I commuted between what was nominally two M60 stops, never took it except for the worst weather, since it was guaranteed faster to walk on average (ie incl. the wait), and often faster to walk even if a bus was arriving

For a while I had to regularly do Harlem-Astoria, and by the third time in a single week I waited 20 minutes in the rain for one on what’s basically an off ramp to grand central parkway I was pretty done with it :/

Ironically enough, this is like, aaaaalmost possible in some parts of small town Austria if you work in, like, engineering consulting. Nightlife you‘ll have to compromise (though it’s better than suburbia; many towns around my hometown have decent bars of different genres, and frequent festivals)

(Tbh I’d say the stronger argument for a 125th-Astoria and beyond line is how busy the M60 is (for non-LGA traffic) despite how slow/unreliable it is, and really at that point why stop at LGA, keep going to flushing and Jamaica ;) )

Kevin Schwarzwald @kschwarzwald.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
(/ how much faster would it be to LGA via a 125th street rail from the densest residential neighborhoods in Manhattan - say the Q-extension UES parts in particular - than having to detour south)
100
Kevin Schwarzwald @kschwarzwald.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
How much MNR (CT/westchester) demand to LGA would you think could be picked up by that? (Specifically vs. cabs over the Whitestone bridge or the cross-Bronx, since that presumably has a substantial leg up over the often pretty unreliable M60)

I’m not sure, it’s one of the two quality-of-life things I associate most with US vs. (At least central) European buses. (The other one is the constant rattling) They often have operable windows, but they’re smaller / higher up and so don’t block my view as much on the higher seats 😅

Underreported in the western transit circles, but Dakar, Senegal, just opened an airport rail link. It's an extension of the existing TER (electrified regional rail line that uses legacy ROW in the city). Not cheap ($1-6 ish for fares) but manages 20Mpax/year already www.rfi.fr/fr/afrique/2...

(Tbf in urban s-bahns in Central Europe they also show you when you’re expected at the next few stops and if there’s a delay…)

Kevin Schwarzwald @kschwarzwald.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
This is intercity rather than urban, but one of the things that makes me most frustrated with Amtrak is that even on their new trains, the digital displays don’t show delays. They also almost never announce them, so you find out when you’re like “huh, I thought south bend was farther away than this”

Can confirm that Colorado intercity public buses (apart from Bustang, I’m also counting the Denver-Boulder and Boulder-DIA ones) are really great. DIA is the one US airport I know with an intercity bus terminal! (Standard in much of Europe eg)

having been to both, I can assure that there’s no station in Europe (incl, apart from Hbf U, the deepest unrenovated tube station or the darkest Passante stop) that quite makes you feel like a dystopic mole person than Millennium Station / Randolph St / South Water (to give its “official“ name) 😅

While we’re on Chicago (I criticize out of love and out of anger at mismatch between potential and actual experience), millennium station, the Loop terminus of major suburban lines to the south and southeast, has platforms that look like this
An underground platform at Chicago’s millennium station, with a low drop ceiling that’s cracking, around ancient steel pillars that are rusting apart, with large puddles on the floor and occasional fluorescent cave lighting on the blank walls

NYC Penn is the easy obvious answer but I regret to give an honorable mention to Chicago Union station. It’s like Penn, if half of old Penn were still around to taunt you, but that half isn’t a part of the station you can really use for anything.

From reviewer experience (earth sciences): 1) very rare (most papers in my field use public data and are very easy to verify) 2) very common (stats recs in grad school when?), but only sometimes changing headline results 3) rare 4) most common as throwaway cites in intro, rare as substantive ones

(The thing that most lives in my mind on this was the CTA bragging when the yellow line/Skokie Swift (5-mile nonstop through suburbia) opened how much faster it was than the Tokyo Tōzai line, which opened the same year, but, uh, passed by many more places/things, and therefore stopped a lot more)
