So how long until we hear the following argument? How can we trust climate models? They operate by integrating the Navier-Stokes equations, and we now know the Navier-Stokes equations blow up!

Land carbon response to positive, zero, and negative CO2 emissions across Earth system models
Abstract. Land carbon sinks are responsible for removing about a quarter of anthropogenic CO2 emissions, and make up approximately half of total global carbon sinks. Uncertainty in the response of lan...

If I understand this, two mathematicians (one at Anthropic) combined a great deal of human effort with LLM input to come close to a famous problem, showing that the Navier-Stokes equations of fluid mechanics developed singularities. But someone from OpenAI might have peeked at their ChatGPT logs...

In the Roman republic citizens had to wait at least two years between successive (1 year long) magistracies The republic fell apart when these norms eroded My proposal is that faculty should spend at least two years as regular faculty b/w (max 3 year long) appointments as deans/provost/president.

I get unreasonably annoyed by France or Canada bragging about poaching a few dozen American scientists, esp while cutting overall research spending. US hired thousands of german scientists in the 30s , and a few more thousands in the 40’s and 50s. Maybe 15% or more of all German academics?

“Almost heaven, West Virginia/ Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River/ Life is old there, older than the trees/ Younger than the mountains, growin' like a breeze” So, life is actually older than the mountains. But those mountains are in fact older than the trees. The Appalachians predate trees!

Was talking to a journalist about the recent heat waves in Europe and the role of atmospheric circulation. They said heat waves were becoming difficult to cover because of the lack of novelty! No wonder we struggle to deal with long-term problems as a society.

Low flow on the Danube means Romania is about to close its only nuclear power plant (20% of total energy production). Breathless 24/7 coverage of the historical drought and impending energy crises, not one mention of climate change. In fact pundits are angry Romania recently closed a coal plant.

I'm sorry, this absolutely does NOT pass the smell test. Developing a camera optical system is not like going to the moon. I believe that they lost the design file for the current 50-year old IMAX system. I do not believe that it would be a huge effort to design a similar device.

A certain class of honest broker types have argued that increases in wildfires are due to forest management and fire suppression rather than climate change. Does this hold any water for Canada? I can't imagine that too much of Canada's boreal forests are managed (or have had fire suppression).
