So let's get data from international travellers being used where it would have the greatest impact on disease, support building sustainable international partnerships in genomic surveillance, and deliver on the aspiration of being a Good Global Partner in the UK National Action Plan on AMR. 7/8

This wouldn’t be a perfect system, and shouldn’t disincentivise the development of local surveillance, but it could support it, and there are many compelling reasons to set up the practice of using traveller data to help inform diarrhoeal disease management in LMIC. 5/8

Kate Baker @ksbakes.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
Genomic epidemiology analyses reveal that these pathogens are geographically structured and analysis of traveller data can reveal important information for disease management in LMIC. Check out the worked example of AMR in Shigella sonnei (and other referenced studies in the paper) for more. 4/8

Kate Baker @ksbakes.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
Diarrhoeal pathogens in HIC are often under routine genomic surveillance in international foodborne disease networks, but large volumes of these data (~75 000 genomes/year) are generated from people who became ill overseas. See data from GenomeTrkr below. 3/8

Kate Baker @ksbakes.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
We’re privileged to collaborate on genomic surveillance of diarrhoeal pathogens and AMR in both high-income countries (HIC) and LMIC, though the imbalance in genomic surveillance capacity is stark: with 540-fold more genomic surveillance in HICs (relative to disease burden) 2/8
