The results of a study by Biswajit Banerjee, @claudiaalcar.bsky.social and @antonipetrov.bsky.social show that evolution-based tokenization can be an alternative to large-scale parameter scaling, opening a new direction for efficient and biologically grounded learning of protein representations.
((A) AUROC calculated on RANGE dataset plotted against Series Identity Threshold; each point corresponds to an evaluation where the retrieval pool is filtered to protein parts at most T% series identity with the demand (x-axis). Dashed lines indicate models requiring 3Di structural tokens as input (SaProt, ProstT5) and A dotted line represents HHblits. (B) Common fold level AUROC averaged over all six thresholds compared to model measure. HHblits is A non-parametric, HMM profile-based comparison.

The non-linear effects that fellow laureate Henri B. Kagan discovered have become an important tool for chemists when they design new reactions. The fact that a reaction is non-linear provides chemists with information about how it occurs.
