Honestly, you saying this does pique my interest in the show. I'm a huge fan of Flanagan but wasn't sure if this series would work for a variety of reasons and wasn't planning on watching it. However, the number of people I trust who are giving it positive reviews does make me curious!

By the time this merger ruins HBO, destroys WB, gets 5,000 people fired, moves production overseas, and guts the quality of the movies the new studio makes, most people will have forgotten how fast the AGs caved and how little they got in this deal. Writers will not.

I genuinely think I've never been more excited to see a movie than I currently am about La Bola Negra. Everything I've heard about it is tailor-made for my interests, and I loved the directors' work in La Mesías.

These books really hold up. I just reread the trilogy and the way Stroud weaves commentary on power, class, and empire into the series is striking. Also the character work is outstanding. Bartimaeus is one of my favorite characters of all time. And yeah, Stroud isn't funding genocide. Always a plus.

Now is a great discourse time to say I saw The Odyssey yesterday and thought it was fine overall but nothing particularly special. Plagued by a lot of my issues with Nolan's work, I found myself feeling distant from the spectacle onscreen. The Circe scene is by far the best part.

*whispers* you know we can do this cultural debate about art thing all the time, right? Websites and news organizations used to have culture critics on staff whose entire job was writing about books, movies, and TV. People read them and then discussed them. We have the technology to do this again.

Thinking about this quote from Persepolis creator Marjane Satrapi again.

Picture of Marjane Satrapi alongside a quote from her. The quote reads:

The world is not divided into countries. The world is not divided between East and West. You are American, I am Iranian, we don't know each other, but we talk together and we understand each other perfectly. The difference between you and your government is much bigger than the difference between you and me. And the difference between me and my government is much bigger than the difference between me and you.

And our governments are very much the same...
