From my personal experience people don't want to pay you to tell them they can't do anything about, eg, the very likely anti-Dem. midterm backlash in 2030 (or, gulp, 34). But it's true. So consultants make up stuff like "Kamala Harris would have won if she ran anti-trans ads"

It really never occurs to these ppl that it is not an equitable outcome to take a public university system that provides underprivileged ppl with a world-class education and make its degrees less reliable than ones from expensive private schools.

My principal used to encourage us(verbally, never in writing) to sit the best performing students, especially girls, next to the worst behaving students who should not be mainstreamed, because it would reign in their behavior(it never did) and all it did was turn good students into bad ones

A really weird irony about the "authenticity" debate wrt rural volk vs cosmopolitan elites is that the actual culture of rural red state America in the 2020s is not actually authentic in any meaningful way?

IMO the biggest priorities would have to be 1. Parliamentary democracy with a no confidence motion 2. Some type of PR electoral system (party list within states?) 3. Curbs on judicial review 4. Hard donation limits/public financing of campaigns I'd be interested in other political scientists' takes

I don't know where this bizarre idea that China has universal health care comes from, but it very much does not by any normal standard. It has a highly tiered system that brutally discriminates against rural patients and imposes often crippling financial costs.

And it wouldn't even lead to lower prices at the pump! Here's the legendary @pkrugman.bsky.social writing in 2000.
Now suppose that we were to cut gasoline taxes. If the price of gas at the pump were to fall, motorists would buy more gas. But there isn't any more gas, so the price at the pump, inclusive of the lowered tax, would quickly be bid right back up to the pre-tax-cut level. And that means that any cut in taxes would show up not in a lower price at the pump, but in a higher price paid to distributors. In other words, the benefits of the tax cut would flow not to consumers but to other parties, mainly the domestic oil refining industry. (As the textbooks will tell you, reducing the tax rate on an inelastically supplied good benefits the sellers, not the buyers.)

Pierre Bourdieu once argued that the question of whether something is art isn't answered by the artist's intention or even the object itself. Instead, the quality of being "art" is conferred by a community — curators, dealers, auction houses, audiences, etc. 🧵
Someone on Threads writes: "The Met Gala feels like real dystopian shit.

People can’t afford groceries or gas. But we’re going to celebrate this event which is nothing more than wealth porn."

Upshot here is that if 2026 goes well for Dems, they’ll be able to offer Republicans a take-it-or-leave it ban on partisan gerrymandering nationally. And if Republicans decline, 2028 will be a bigger bloodbath, ahead (hopefully) of a Dem trifecta and principled democracy reform.
