People mistakenly believe that unfunded inclusionary zoning is a way to tax developers and rich people to fund subsidized housing for the poor. It is not. In reality, it’s a tax on working and middle class renters. Actual rich people, who overwhelmingly own single family homes, pay nothing at all.

Cities are living things and neighborhoods change as newcomers leave their mark. This is okay, even if it is often uncomfortable. The best thing we can do is build a lot of new homes so that new people can move in without displacing long time residents.

"the impact of the crash trapped Ivana and the baby. (Martins) and passing motorists attempted to free Ivana and the baby. But the flames and ongoing explosions were too much to endure” Awful. Tragic. Policy failures at all levels of government. link.amazon/B02UZ7H53
Cover image for bookThis book demands each of us look in the mirror and get real before we get behind the wheel.

When fragile human bodies have to occupy the same spaces as big, heavy, complex machines that can travel at high speeds, the outcome is inevitable. Some people will die. So why do we identify with the driver in the car rather than the person they have killed? Would you still shrug and chalk it up to random bad luck if that dead person was someone you loved?

Using the comic book format, this book vehemently dispels the notion that traffic accidents are inevitable and/or acceptable on any level, insisting that drivers own their responsibility, and consider the consequences of careless and dangerous behavior. It is part thought experiment, part testimonial, and part indictment of a dysfunctional transit environment that puts convenience for drivers ahead of logic, natural resources, and even ahead of human life. Crash Course questions the decisions that shape all our lives. Why don't roads serve everyone who needs to use them? What makes some people not worth protecting? Where do we start in fixing a broken system that facilitates the use of vehicles as murder weapons in places like Charlottesville, VA?"

Good info and leadership from @kirkpwatson.bsky.social re: AISD "If a majority of parents petition for closure, the Commissioner must close the campuses rather than replace AISD's elected board." #atx mailchi.mp/mc.onbehalfof.austintexa…
THE WATSON WIRE
By law, the State Commissioner of Education must intervene in the Austin
Independent School District because two middle schools —Burnet and Webb-have
received five consecutive accountability ratings of F. The law provides possible
actions by the Commissioner, including closing the two schools or replacing the
elected school board with a state-appointed board of managers.
I oppose a state takeover of Austin ISD.Successful schools, successful city
These children and their families are my constituents, and the success of our public
schools is inextricably tied to the success of our city and its future potential.
We want families to stay in Austin. Schools matter.
We want every child to have genuine opportunity. Education is the most powerful
 opportunity infrastructure a community has.
We want Austin kids to grow up with the skills to participate in the extraordinary
economy being built around them. Workforce development begins long before
somebody fills out a job application.
We want companies to invest here and create career-sustaining jobs for Austinites.
Employers care about the workforce that schools are preparing. They seek a city in
which their employees can expect their kids to be well educated.
And I have unambiguously declared that I want Austin to be the best place in
America to be a kid.Parents act. Communities stay together. Progress continues.
There's a path worth pursuing short of the state replacing the elected leadership of
an entire school district serving roughly 70,000 children.
And, make no mistake, if the state takes over the district, we can reasonably expect
that Webb, Burnet, and other district campuses will be closed.
Texas law gives the parents at Webb and Burnet a powerful voice. If a majority of
parents petition for closure, the Commissioner must close the campuses rather than
 replace AISD's elected board.
That gives this community a path to act instead of simply waiting for something to
happen to us. It gives the families most impacted a say in what comes next.
And Austin has an opportunity to do this without breaking these school communities
 apart.
A brand-new $158 million, state of the art, building is going up right now at Burnet
 Middle School's existing site.
Superintendent Segura's past work gives me confidence that he would develop an
ambitious plan that refuses to disperse students from struggling campuses among
existing middle schools. I trust him, with the support of the elected board, to create a
new school in a brand-new facility that keeps each school community together.
And I believe he will listen to the families and work with the community to
fundamentally rethink what surrounds those students and families: academic
interventions, exceptional teachers and leadership, mental-health and family
support, extended learning opportunities, community partnerships and dedicated
 support services.
We can expect him to include whatever the evidence tells us these children need to
succeed, and we can expect him to listen to the parents most impacted.
Then I think Commissioner Morath should give this plan and the districtwide reforms
already underway the time to demonstrate results.
We're not asking the state to suspend accountability. We're asking the state to let
 results determine what happens next.

Underappreciated: US farmland *already substantially produces energy, not food*, and does so very inefficiently. Corn ethanol (~40% of all US corn) requires about 100 times more land per vehicle-mile driven than solar photovoltaics -> electric vehicles. Shifting corn to solar *would free up land*.
