We will need both carrot (incentives for clean energy) and stick (disincentives for fossil fuels) to follow the needed decarbonization pathway. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something — probably (directly or indirectly) fossil fuels.

There is a whiff of exploitation with these law firms. At least when I was in these kinds of boards, we couldn't fire a student if we couldn't find a smoking gun or otherwise bulletproof evidence of cheating. If you hadn't done anything, you were safe. AI-proofing assessment ofc solves all this.

The American 0.1% now own a record 15% of US total wealth, fuelled massively by stock market growth, which is not accessible to the average person. The Big Beautiful Bill lowered corporate taxes and allowed for writing off private jets. Trump’s economy is solely for the already rich.

Monday morning outside Rotterdam Centraal, thousands of cyclists stream toward the station in a carefully choreographed flow. What you’re seeing is the power of systems thinking—the bicycle and train both succeed because they work together seamlessly, where each mode extends the reach of the other.

Effective altruism is closely linked to the Epstein-backed Edge network of big-name scholars/thinkers, many of whom believe their brilliance makes them better than everyone and uniquely capable of saving the world. So it's not surprising to me that these men see women as less than full human beings.

Lots of great shows here but I don't see HBO's Rome? Surely it belongs in the top 100. I'll also use this opportunity to say that I really couldn't stand Breaking Bad and don't get its popularity. If there's one word to encapsulate that show, it's "contrived."

I agree with Jensen Huang that OpenAI has an engineering problem being hyped as existential risk. Its models treat hacking websites like another way to answer a question, no different from Google search. That’s a product problem. Calling this “alignment” gives the tool more agency than it has.

From Mary Douglas to Barry Barnes to every single sociologist of knowledge worth anything, we know that scientific knowledge is conventional and grounded on *social*, collectve institutions. An LLM faffing around with bio papers is neither an institution, nor collective, nor conventional.

My thoughts on existential risk: * Humanity isn't going to be wiped out any time soon. * Negligible chance that AI by itself causes catastrophic damage to humanity (millions dead). * Some nontrivial chance that human beings will leverage AI to help them do something catastrophically harmful.
