LA clearly kicked this off -- in terms of schools districts taking an about face -- but it's really been due to parents mobilizing in each city

In April, the Los Angeles Unified School District became the first of its size to pass a resolution capping the time students can spend on screens, addressing complaints that students often became distracted by games and social media on school-issued devices. The resolution also ordered an audit of the widely used and often criticized assessment software i-Ready, as well as all other educational technology contracts. And it blocked students from browsing YouTube and set up a committee to craft rules on AI.

During the committee’s first meeting Wednesday, L.A. district administrators said they recently decided to block all grade levels from accessing generative AI platforms like ChatGPT, Claude and Nano Banana. Previously, the district had barred children under 13 from using them.

In New York City, the school system forbade children in preschool through second grade from using computers and recommended daily screen time limits of 30 minutes for third through fifth grade and 45 minutes for middle schoolers. A new committee of school officials, labor leaders and parents will revisit the technology changes next year.

Autocrats like tech-based curriculum like this even better than censored textbooks because the tech rather than a human will provide context, ask them questions about it, and discuss it with them. Tech based curriculum goes hand-in-hand with book bans and other classroom and library censorship.

Abstract
Using 30 months of panel data on 26,811 Chinese students in grades 7-12, we study how generative Al affects homework productivity and learning. The data combine monthly closed-book exams, high-school and college entrance exams, and homework scores and completion time across nine subjects. We exploit staggered Al adoption in a difference-in-differences design. Al adoption raises homework scores by 18% and reduces completion time by 30%, but lowers monthly exam scores by 20% within six months.
High-stakes entrance-exam scores fall by 18 and 24%, with the full penalty emerging only after about two years. The losses are largest in social science subjects, followed by STEM and languages, and are especially large for junior students, high-achieving students, and boys. The learning losses are concentrated among roughly 80% of Al users whose behavior is consistent with homework outsourcing, as indicated by exceptionally short homework completion time coupled with high homework scores. Al users who maintain similar homework completion time as non-Al users experience small learning losses.

According to Axios, one of the last things Graham said was “I can’t die now,” so at least he died doing what he loved: being wrong. Lindsey Graham, 71, passed away on Saturday when all of his blood tried to go somewhere better.

There’s an implicit contract between artists & audience that the artist will expend significantly more time & effort to create their art than the audience will expend to consume it. AI art flips that equation, which is part of why it feels inherently offensive.
