I am against the rise of largely unfettered online gambling to begin with, but it feels like society has collectively forgotten the concepts of a double standard or a conflict of interest!

It's not October if we're not getting ESPN reports about how Luka Doncic and/or Joel Embiid are really honestly for truesies coming into the new season in elite shape.

the big questions of "what are LLMs" and "what is alignment" remain important but they are separable from the question of AI safety we can talk about safety as a systems process regardless of what the nature of the technology is, and AI companies are failing in those processes

Journalistic balance does not require that you seek to find the positives in the largest, most sustained act of cheating in professional sports history. Especially if it's investigating an idea that, apparently, no one independent or respectable can be found to put their name to.

The obsession about losing "stars" to foreign leagues is also bizarre. Even with a triumphant* Man City, Real and Barcelona have remained the numero uno destination, with PSG becoming a proper one too. Look at where the likely Top 3 of the 2026 BO play today - it's not in England.

Cristiano Ronaldo seems very committed to doing away with the sanitized, normal legacy he really was on course to have (even if he didn’t actually deserve it)

Listening to Lineker say City fans are "ultimately the people that suffer from this" and I completely get what he means - yes, they will suffer, but: 1) For almost 20 years they have only benefitted; everyone else in the game has suffered. 2) Let it be a lesson: PROTEST YOUR CORRUPT OWNERS!

Andy Burnham's comments today expose the situation of selling national football teams to foreign states. He's taking a view, at least in one reading of his comments, that corrupting the national game is not as big an issue as potentially losing foreign investment in Manchester.

An undeniable fact is absolutely none of the English teams have the sauce. They’re all extremely boring and have zero tangible personality, same goes for their managers.

it's so wonderful that even as Ronaldo had endless opportunities to close his international career on his own terms as a legend, he has chosen instead "inscrutably pissy" as an approach to the end

Manchester City signed Samir Nasri later that summer. Marseille, Chelsea, Man City. All in one man's career. It's no wonder he was bold enough to challenge it as it happened - must have been absolutely sick of being cheated.

The behaviour of Manchester City's ownership has been fundamentally incompatible with the responsibilities of being a custodian of a priceless cultural organisation and so they must be drummed out of English football.

If one of the "rewards" of affluence is that you get to opt out of the services everyone else uses -- roads & transit, aviation system, schools, healthcare, etc. -- then those services are inevitably starved of resources & decline. We have to force affluent people to be invested in them.

Perhaps it's more of an indication as to how well we defend in the area, but the way our defenders backed off for the first two goals allowing time for well placed shots should be food for thought.

Notably, despite the fact that the league averaged the most possessions with at least three offensive players crashing (20.5) of any season in the tracking era, the only top-six defense that crashes heavily while also limiting fast-break points was Boston.

the problem here is that insofar as this is the core of the issue, it is more or less entirely unaddressable by policy means my bleak intuition is that the median American wants the cleansing fire of a recession to reset their relationship to the price level

Excellent discussion of how the Antebellum South drove itself entirely insane with the tension between its delusions of being chivalrous and honorable and the barbarous monstrosities of chattel slavery that formed the central pillar of their entire society. Spoiler: still relevant to today!

one of the oddest persistent beliefs in internet sports fandom is the idea that how fans feel about offseason moves is important in any way at all if the team is bad it won't matter the fans liked the offseason, if the team is good it won't matter they hated it. just build a good team that wins
