Great @the-downballot.com nationwide analysis of how the Blue Wave could be a Blue Tsunami. Diving into specific districts, I found six non-DCCC-Red-to-Blue Dem challengers where Dem primary turnout exceeded R's. Trump won all these districts by 8 or more. Can we snatch some victories in '26? A 🧵

I'm not surprised that different issues would pop in testing for Sen v. Gov. I think if you lined up Turek + Sand's public statements you'd find good alignment but need for Turek to define himself as new to Iowans across the state vs Sand's record as auditor

Of course, nothing "will" happen w/ 100% certainty, but forgive me for this spicy take: It's not crazy to me that an org should have some thoughts on the productivity of their policy advocacy, how that somewhat translates into supply, & what kind of credit. It's an imperfect but IMO useful exercise

Yes agree 10000% w/ @michaelcaley.bsky.social. I'm sure if you asked Iowa voters who is more moderate they would say Sand, the relatively better known and statewide elected State Auditor!

People are mad at Nate Cohn over this statement but it seems pretty consistent with Bailey Reese (2025) which looks at how candidates talk about themselves in evaluating the impact of moderation on campaign outcomes particularly in competitive races. papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

This is a fascinating, technical analysis of primary polling misses. But it raises an interesting question we'll likely need final voter file data to answer—did fewer young people turn out than expected, or did more older folks turn out than expected? And also: most elections are not NYC Mayor.

Ok I’ve done a Washington primary analysis that I think does a few useful adjustments to allow a nice comparison over time. This looks at aggregate two party WA primary congressional vote and aggregate two party vote nationally in these elections with some slight adjustments.

Good news: some of the US international aid funding has been restored! I graphed it here to put the numbers in context of the scale of the cuts. The article says PEPFAR restoration is still to come. 🤞
Recipient: Gavi
Restored (2026): $600M
Pre-cut US baseline: $300M/yr (FY24 enacted; FY25 + FY26 each appropriated at
$300M, both blocked by Kennedy)
Restored as % of baseline: ~100% of the two withheld years
────────────────────────────────────────
Recipient: WFP
Restored (2026): $800M
Pre-cut US baseline: $4.45B (CY2024, top donor; all donors totaled $9.76B)
Restored as % of baseline: 18%
────────────────────────────────────────
Recipient: UNICEF
Restored (2026): $218M
Pre-cut US baseline: $1.118B (CY2024, largest donor)
Restored as % of baseline: 19%
────────────────────────────────────────
Recipient: Global Fund
Restored (2026): $661M
Pre-cut US baseline: $1.65B/yr (FY24 approp.; peaked $2.0B FY23)
Restored as % of baseline: 40% of one year — and explicitly arrears against
prior-year appropriations
────────────────────────────────────────
Recipient: ICRC + IFRC
Restored (2026): $203M
Pre-cut US baseline: US gave CHF 544M to ICRC alone in 2021 as its top donor
Restored as % of baseline: ~⅓ or less

It also means moderation on specific issues—particularly issues where a party is out of step with the public—may yield bigger electoral gains. These gains will still be small, though—meaning moderation across *many* issues is likely needed for parties to make a meaningful dent.
