Wauwatosa had a public meeting last night for a reconstruction project of the state highway going through the village. The former mayor (Kathy Ehley), who championed many urbanist improvements while in office, was there and told me about why there’s a historic district along part of the corridor.

What’s sad is only 7-8 years ago, we were considering these two concepts as part of the MCTS NEXT redesign, showcasing a pretty massive 15 minute or better network that served almost the entire county. One day, hopefully soon, we’ll get back to this type of service

Why are the Amtrak Airos a net good for passenger rail in the U.S.? 1) Amtrak desperately needs more trains. These are more trains. 2) Time savings on engine swaps @ WAS, PHL & NHV 3) Cab cars for push-pull corridors save terminal recovery time, non-revenue movements & crew time 🚆

Here’s the most incredible story you’ll read today. A small plane with four people aboard crashes in a field. Another pilot witnesses it. That pilot happens to be flying a bunch of skydivers. They offer to jump to assist, are given permission. The skydivers happen to be EMTs. Everyone survives.

That’s right
Fool's Expertise is particularly perilous when discussing catastrophe, which nearly tautologically involves long chains of causation that transcend domains: fully understanding one link does not imply understanding the chain. (This is why when the NTSB investigates an accident, the NTSB Go Team consists of experts across many different domains: they know that a catastrophic accident may involve failures across several different domains, interacting and cascading into broader system failure.)And to say it clearly: to the degree that Al-inflicted doom relies on pathways into the real world, experts on those pathways must be consulted. Is Al a cybersecurity threat? Please talk to cybersecurity experts - who will be quick to point out that the ballyhooed OpenAl escape depended on a pedestrian failure of containment. Are we concerned that Al is somehow going to fashion a novel pathogen? Let's please consult experts on viral synthesis - and listen to why they think that the fears are misplaced. Or maybe it's nukes that we're afraid that Al will get a hold of? Great news: seven decades of living with the possibility of global thermonuclear war gave us not just extensive safeguards but also huge wells of expertise to draw from!

It is a true statement that, outside of the Islands of Japan, people in 1965 repeatedly struggle to believe that railroads— outside of some niche applications — are not headed the way of the Dodo. But the road revolts happen, the cars get stuck in traffic, and the trains get faster.

I'm willing to (mostly) put this aside for now since we are in the heat of an extremely important election season, but just to put my cards on the table: 1. Voting Kamala Harris in 2024 was the correct choice 2. Not voting/voting 3rd party was a foolish, costly mistake
