this kind of chart doubles down on the dumb in “social science” and economics. the dumb comes from lossily compressing complex phenomena into rankable scalars, then using arithmetic and ranking to launder claims into “scientific” truths. 1/

The decline of Reform — and the fragmentation of the far right — should be a major news story too. But most media barely care… More evidence that media are not “just reporting the news” but are actively shaping it. With significant political consequences.

the funny thing is even if you decide to be generous and give obama's position here credence, the core problem remains that a ton of the most visible democrats - himself included! - will not take actually strong moral stances, even/especially against deeply unpopular policies, people, corps, etc

We told everyone that programming wasn't the hard part, but no one believed us. The reason LLMs can excrete sort-of-okay code is that sort-of-okay code has been a commodity good for 20+ years. Then, just like now, the bottleneck was understanding what people actually want.

The U.S. government appears to be heavily telegraphing an upcoming military escalation. Could be a bluff. Could not be a bluff. They’re definitely sending signals though.
Travel Gov advisory on Twitter:

Middle East: Due to tensions in the Middle East, the security environment remains complex with the potential for unforeseen escalation. Americans currently in the Middle East should exercise heightened vigilance and be aware of potential flight cancellations, airspace closures, and travel disruptions. Iranian-supported Houthis have engaged in hostilities against Saudi Arabia, including civilian airports. This military conflict has the potential to escalate rapidly. Americans outside the Middle East should seriously reconsider travel to and through the region. Those who do travel to or from the region should monitor information about airport and airline operations. U.S. diplomatic facilities, including outside the Middle East, have been targeted. Iran and groups supportive of Iran may target other U.S. interests overseas or at locations associated with the United States and Americans throughout the world, including U.S. businesses and other institutions. Read the latest country-specific alerts at:Raprock Ravid translated from Hebrew:

President Trump has cut short his weekend getaway at the presidential retreat in Camp David, and he is returning to the White House this evening instead of Sunday evening. The White House did not provide the reason for shortening the vacation.NAYA, translated from Arabic:

The embassy has issued "High Alert" program

Occupied Palestine
Iraq
Lebanon

You can't get a clearer example of the geometric trade-off between cars and homes than this: BART is trading 240 parking spots for 760 homes. The 240 drivers who use those parking spots would argue that's a bad deal. What about the 760 *families* who get homes? Cars are undemocratic, full stop.
