Thinking of sci-fi niches for the human race that aren't "adaptable," which is the coward's choice. I feel like we'd be famous for being good physicists. Splitting the atom before sending a human into space feels like it would be a rare sequence of events.

For those keeping score at home: it looks like Metroid Ravenous uses the "silhouette" environment art style again. See: johnnesky.com/twitter-shak... My only other question is: does it have earworms? The song in the trailer sounds cool in the moment but doesn't qualify.

Octaves aren't eights. Fifths aren't fives. Black key naming conventions are fitting a square peg in a round hole. FM synthesis isn't frequency modulation. Decibels are a disaster: blog.coredump.cx/p/decibels-a... Logic and reason were never an option. Unless you're referring to the DAWs.

What if our ears were like our eyes, and only had three (types of) receptors? Interestingly speech is still more or less intelligible, but not much else to me this shows how much more discriminating of frequencies our hearing is than our vision. Of course our vision has much more spatial resolution

Fascinating. I knew a bit of this (e.g., fingers/pick near the bridge on a bass gives you a harsher sound with more bite due to the differing harmonics), but the variety of oscillating shapes from different excitation methods are wild. www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYdX...

stumbled on this interesting reverb allpass delay calculator website - polarity.me/posts/helper... - i think trom a member of the bitwig grid community. the IR it generates is quite nice in my initial quick test, tho i suggest an allpass feedback of 0.75 rather than 0.5

I made this a while ago. There are some vertebrates in here but the inverts steal the show. I especially love the triangular plaid on the velvet worm.
25 rectangular pictures of close ups of animals with different patterns that would make good prints. We’ve got purple and green stripes on a chiton, there’s blue rings on a yellow octopus, there’s navy blue and sky blue triangular tartan on a velvet worm, mottled black spots overlaid on a rainbow gradient on a lizard, blue and green eye spots on a turtle shell, labyrinthine ridges on brain coral, red and white candy stripes on an amphipod, Rorschach test blots on a crab, and teal and coral colored geometric shapes on a beetle.

Camera rewrite proceeding apace: it casts two spheres - one the size of the camera, the other slightly bigger, it uses the latter as a soft target, with the former as a hard limit on how far away you can go. Satisfying - I had been far too tolerant of penetration until now. #OeufGame #GodotEngine

Made a little VR locomotion tunnel vision shader. This is a pretty standard trick to mitigate motion sickness for players that want to use smooth locomotion. It works by showing a stationary environment in the peripheral vision during smooth locomotion. #GodotEngine #gamedev #indiedev

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy: www.citizensinformation.ie/en/employmen...
Post from Threads user rodneyowl: "Ireland has declared the Basic Income for Artists scheme permanent. This will be officially announced in tomorrow’s budget. Details to follow. Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me 👌We’re just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. It’s been a roaring success. For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back. Can’t argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."

I've spent *years* researching 3D Platformer Cameras in hopes of making Slime 64's camera "not terrible." In this thread, the White Cylinder is the Camera Target (slightly above the player!), and the Orange Cones represent the "vertical dead zone" where the camera won't follow player movement.

The contract is that I will willingly suspend my disbelief and accept the storyteller's contrivance. But in return I expect them to earn or minimize their contrivances. I expect major coincidences to occur at the beginning and start the ball rolling, not provide solutions at the end.

A radius in a square (or other regular polygon) is the distance from the centre to a corner, because these are always the same length, but distance from radius to any arbitrary point along the edge will vary. Apothem is distance from centre to the middle of an edge (where it meets@ 90°)

10th anniversary Journey thread, recreated: I was the art director of thatgamecompany's Journey. It set the course of my career and my art. I'm forever thankful to the community of players and their incredible love for the game. This is a thread comparing early dev images and how things shipped.
The intro title shot from the PS3 game Journey. This is from the finished game. The title "Journey" is displayed above a distant mountain, with the player character seeing it from atop a sand dune. The intro title shot from a work in progress version of Journey. The title's font is different, the composition is asymmetrical, and the distant mountain is not as tall as the final version. My initial sketch for the title shot for the game Journey.
