The cookie challenge in this season of Great British Baking show has caused me to question the entire show. You might like crunchy cookies or gooey cookies, but the goal is rarely to combine the two textures? The best cookies I saw were the ones one contestant discarded cause they were too soft.

Science fiction authors designing aliens need to aspire to at least the level of weirdness of a real bucket orchid. Coryanthes macrantha in my greenhouse this morning. Flower is approx 15 cm wide, 10 cm tall. 🌴🌱
A bucket orchid in shades of orange and yellow. The bucket is formed from the distal end of the labellum and the column. Glands drip liquid into the bucket. Bees falling into the bucket can only escape through a hole at one side where they will be forced into contact with the pollen and stigma at the end of the column. The hole is pretty large, so the bees must be equally big. The sepals look like big wings made of tissue paper that counterbalance the bucket. The base of the labellum where it connects to the rest of the flower looks like a weirdly ridged orange alien penis.

I’ll also point out that universities set themselves up as basically their own little towns so that standards of behavior and punishment for infractions could be handled by the university and not the government. In loco parentis is why people can be punished with an essay for a violent crime.

The smallest bat in North America is the canyon bat (Parastrellus hesperus), also called the western pipistrelle or American parastrelle. They weigh about 3–6 grams, the weight of a US penny, sheet of paper, or teaspoon of sugar. In flight, they're sometimes confused for moths or butterflies.
A tiny smoke-grey furry bat with darker face, ears and wings. The big story is the tiny size. The entire bat fits on a portion of a human's thumb, a tee-weeny tiny little guy.

This is a viral photo that's circulated for years, but I found it on r/BatFacts posted by u/Pardusco.
