#NZpol “Levying billions of dollars of charges onto every New Zealand family and business to increase our dependence on overseas fossil fuels is crazy,” — NZGBC chief executive Andrew Eagles Yes, it really *is* beyond economic madness to push LNG. Definitely some very ugly quid pro quo going down.
Excerpt from an article "Solar, heat pumps ‘lower cost’ path than LNG for electrification, says NZGBC" which covers a Report carried out into what this may mean in terms of costs to households and businesses.

Excerpt reads:

"The report, reviewed by energy experts, finds that LNG-fuelled wholesale electricity could cost more than double that of new renewable generation. Including the cost of a taxpayer-funded LNG import terminal, total electricity costs are estimated at between $260 and $540 per megawatt hour.

It says residential natural gas prices could rise by a further 25%, while some industrial users may become uneconomic.

The NZGBC argues that investing in rooftop solar and heat pumps would lower the cost of generating the same energy by between $3b and $6b over 15 years, and save households almost $7b in energy bills over the same period.

The report says solar panels and heat pumps are long-life capital assets that permanently reduce household energy bills, whereas LNG would represent an ongoing fuel cost subject to global price shocks."

Really quick chart to show the rise of declared state of emergencies due to sever weather events. See the trend? Also we are only 45 days into 2026! Can we talk about climate change now? #NZPol Notes in Alt Text
Source data starts 2002, I couldn't be bothered finding previous data b because NZ Civil defence page for historical data no longer exists.

Where a regional emergency had been upgraded due to the same event, declared emergencies are counted as the same event.

Earthquakes despite what some casseroles think are not caused by climate change, so no they are not included.

Declared State of Emergencies Weather Related: source

Pls fell free to check the data, I could be output the trend line is the same
