I think the Mata poll showing a surge in support for the Greens among Māori voters signals a structural shift as millennials/Gen X Māori rapidly outnumber the older population. This shift was emerging 10 years ago, and for the foreseeable Labour/Greens/and TPM will roughly share support in thirds

Most remarkable in Andy Burnham's conference speech: a politician doing politics. Years of political craft, hard choices named, priorities set (care over the pensions triple lock) and rhetoric used to argue the trade-off.

MOG and institutional design is the driest thing I could put in front of you and say this is good. The Prime Minister's main role is to coordinate policy and make it cohere in delivery. Cohering means holding the collective obligation in front of mind while each agency goes about its own work.

This is important b/c the harms ARE gendered. An AI policy must reckon with this. Unequal power relations based on gender and race are embedded at the start when tech is designed, when guardrails are not mandated, and reinforced by the use of the tech.

It is fair to say this is a centralising administration. A good majority of the reforms have pulled decision-making to Wellington, with some of it moved into political authorising environments. That is a real and important feature of this government. But not for this matter.

Beginning my research seminar, as always, with Lynn Hunt's essay How Writing Leads to Thinking (and Not the Other Way Around). Should be mandatory reading in light of the impact of AI. www.historians.org/perspectives...
Writing is stressful. Sitting in my computer chair my neck and shoulder muscles almost immediately tense up as I dig around in my brain for the best phrase or even any coherent string of words, whether I am writing an essay like this one, a book chapter, a letter of recommendation, or an email message to a friend. Writing is time-consuming. It’s a great way to pass the time on a long airplane flight because you lose track of the passage of time altogether. It’s even better, from that point of view exclusively, than watching an episode of Mad Men on your laptop. Writing means many different things to me but one thing it is not: writing is not the transcription of thoughts already consciously present in my mind. Writing is a magical and mysterious process that makes it possible to think differently.
